Brunei Short Haul 763ER

Fri May 19, 2006 11:32 pm

Yesterday I flew Royal Brunei from Brunei to Kota Kinabalu, a 40 minute journey, barely 20 minutes in the air.The flight was 2 hours late, due to the late incoming flight from Singapore!

The plane used was a 763ER which seemed a bit odd on such a short route, and not that busy I wouldn't have thought (it's not like SIN to KUL for example). Certainly the shortest widebody flight I've been on.

BWN-BKI is usually full outbound on Fridays, inbound on Sundays, although a 767 is too much capacity except during holiday periods. No doubt this was an aircraft substitution. BWN-BKI is one of my favorite flights (flown via 752 & 734)- 5 minute climb, 5 minute cruise, 10 minute slow decent... heaven!

Nope it wasn't, BI operate the 763 on the BWN-BKI route 1x weekly  Smile

How was the flight on board the 763?

Did it feature the new cabins, or the old ones?

As far as I know, all BI B763ERs have been configured with the new Business Class by now.

They might use the 763 as it has a slot in its timetable where it stands around at BWN and no 319/320 are around.

By the way, what happened to the 752, is it still around? I flew twice between BWN and BKI on their 752.

The 752 is definitely not used any more, the photo above is quite touching really (the livery suits the plane really well).

The flight was short and sweet (apart from the 2 hour delay!) Glass of juice before takeoff, sweet for landing, I think 3000m was a high as we got! The cabin looked new (I haven't seen the old one, so can't confirm), it only had a small business class cabin (I believe they have 763s in various cabin layouts)

Didn't Royal Brunei have two 757s V8-RBA and V8-RBB. After V8-RBB was reposessed from Royal Tongan where did it go?

Yes, I flew twice on V8-RBA. Once back in 2000 from BWN to BKI and then again in Feb 2004 from BKI to BWN. When was its last flight?

What did happen to V8-RBB? I Hope it is in a better shape than V8-RBA!

V8-RBB is still flying, now for Azerbaijan Airlines, registered as 4K-AZ43.

We tried to charter V8-RBB when Tongan had it. Cheap to charter, (must have got the deal from hell from Royal Brunei) but not enough seats & managment didn't have a clue.

Surely it wouldn't have ben scrapped as well???

May be getting off the original topic, but why did Royal Tongan want the 757?, where I thought maybe a 737 would be better for them.

What about economy class? As far as I know only 4 have been re-configured with the new interior. Are BI planning on re-fitting all of it's long-haul fleet?

I think the King of Tonga got offered a deal from hell by Sultan of brunei, apparently a friend.

Back in AUG'03 we were apparently offerred the Tongan 752 for AUD$5000/hour (~USD$3850) fully inclusive of everything, (according to an old email I dug up) except alcohol, that's FULL CHARTER the catering, with no minimum number of hours & maximum only restricted by number of hours left after few flights to Tonga from AKL & SYD.

Personal taxes/charges of course weren't included. With the 752's superior range to 737's except relatively new & expensive to charter/lease 737-700's & -800's, it was very cheap per seat, esp. if they would have put say 228 Y class seats, instead of something like 176 spilt over 2 classes.

forgot to metnion, apparently Tonga has a lot of seafood to export & good prices or USD$ can be got in HNL. Tongan was planing to fly TBU/HNL with a lot of seafood. Don't think a 737 could fly TBU/HNL with pax & a lot of seafood, whereas imagine with a 752 & longer legs could carry a lot more freight & pax!!!

Would NZ re-start Tonga-Honolulu or Apia-Honolulu now that PH is no longer operating the routes.

Only 4 of 6 763's have been refitted (V8-RBF/G/H/J) and these are rostered on LHR & FRA flights. V8-RBL operates in the same configuration with the old leather first class seats sold as biz class. V8-RBK maninly does the SHJ-JED route and some PER or BNE-AKL routes and has a higher capacity.

All 3 757's are gone. Unfortunately, when the first ship departed (V8-RBC) the ER spares were also sold to Kazakhstan and V8-RBA/B lost their ER ability. Hence the problem with the Tongan lease (aside from Tonga not paying the bills)- nobody checked the aircraft was unable to operate TBU-HNL. However, the NZ pilots loved the lease as they got to be based in AKL for a time. And yes- RBA management doesn't have a clue... about anything (second worse mismanaged airline in Asia after Thai).

Yes

Incidentally, there was a problem with the seat allocations, so we got to sit where we liked.
