Mobile Lounges At JFK

Sat May 20, 2006 1:58 am

Just wondering about the history of the use of mobile lounges at the airport. I know Pan Am had some mobile lounge docks after they expanded their terminal, and assume their use was discontinued long ago.

Also, I just saw a photo of the TWA terminal dated 1994, and their are several TWA logo mobile lounges pulled up to aircraft, so I wonder, what for?

Cheers.

Flying OSL-JFK-MSP in 1985 we disembarked through mobile lounges out on the tarmac at JFK. We were then driven to International Arrivals terminal to go through customs while the 747 was pulled to the domestic terminal to be reboarded for the domestic part of the flight.

DL was still using them several years back, as back in 2000, we deplaned from a 777 (MCO-JFK) using them.

I am pretty sure they where used heavily during the re-building of Terminal 4. With the loss of gates many planes parked out on the apron.

They were used quite often at the old IAB before the new T4 was opened. There just weren't enough gates during the afternoon rush of arrivals from Europe. However, I (thankfully) haven't had to use one in years, so I guess the combination of the new T1 and T4 have solved this problem for the most part. I remember Pan Am used to use them at T3 too, but from my recent experiences Delta almost always parks at jetways there, even if it means waiting on the taxiway for a while after landing during busy times (grrr).

I used one to deplane from an SR MD-11 at T3 in 1998 or something like that.

Delta has their own lounges . . . newer white ones. The rest were green or orange and i think a few red ones.

I believe they said New York heart heart heart You.

Either way, I believe Delta still uses them in the T2/3 complex.

The old Pan Am planemates were white and we had all of 2 drivers, Jimmy and Jerry. I kid you not, this is the true story of the Pan Am planemates in the early 80's. Where these 2 fellows are today is anybody's guess but they were invaluable back then.

The only one I ever used at JFK was on Tower Air in 1995...
