Many Diversions To BOS Today

Sat May 20, 2006 8:56 am

Bad weather at JFK... THY Turkish, Olympic, a LH flight and at least 2 DL flights (VCE, IST) landed at Logan. My own DL Connection from BOS to JFK circled Block Island for 50 minutes before returning to BOS.

I'm not surprised--we've had some seriously nasty thunderstorms on and off all day. I think my office building (one of the tallest downtown) got struck by lightning--bright flash all around, and BOOM! Scared the bejeezus out of everyone.

Darn! - I was going to go to BOS this afternoon but had a follow-up doctors appointment from my surgery last Friday. Oh well - stuff like that happens.

I didn't see all of them but in the span of about 20 mins the following landed at BOS:

-Turkish A340 (TK001)
-Iberia A340 (IB6251)
-British Airways 747 (BA177)
-Olympic A340 (OA411)
-Lufthansa A330 (LH406)
-Unidentified 767 (possibly one of the DL but I was looking at it from behind)

I also heard a rumour of a TAP to EWR but I never saw it.

Well, my little BOS-JFK Comair CRJ that had circled over Block Island until he had to divert back to BOS got stuck in that queue of diversions and almost had to go to PWM to be on the ground with legal fuel reserves. Somehow, just after deciding to head to Portland, BOS opened the door for him and we landed, elapsed time 2:15 since original takeoff from BOS. My flight was full of folks connecting to Europe... SVO, AMS, MAD and in my case, TXL, heading for the Berlin Air Show. Just not meant to be!

I was flying back on VS9 last nite. it's a good thing then that my flight had as a 5 hour delay - wouldn't want to be diverted to BOS.

We did meet some to that weather over the Atlantic, I think. The plane shook like crazy about 2.5 hours outside of the NYC area
