Airline Naming Rights!

hey guys, I was just wondering if a person wanted to start and airline with the name of a previously defunct airline or an airline currently flying, what is it that they have to do to have the name legally? thanks guys for your answers!!

You just have to buy the rights. In some cases it's not easy to determine who actually owns the rights or how to contact them. In those situations the name is still off limits and not usable until somebody is willing to track down the owner or owners of the name and convince them to sell their ownership.

A company's name, logos, brand, etc. etc. are intellectual property that's protected by things like trademarks, etc. It doesn't matter if you're talking about an airline, or a video game, or jeans.

If the company (airline) went bankrupt, the intellectual property might have been sold as part of a liquidation.
