IB 767's, Why Not Kept?

Sun May 21, 2006 5:13 pm

Around the turn of the century and up to 2001, Iberia had gone from having UX wet leased two 767-300ER's to purchasing and operating the aircraft with their own pilots. My question is really why after having made such move would the airline dispose of them so quickly? They seemed like an excellent fit, and in regards to the operation of heavier twins could have been a good replacement for trunk routes operated by the A300's. I know they were often seem operating transatlantic routes as well as heavier trunk European routes and "Puente Aereo" routes.

Seemed like a good fit in my book, anyone here know the specific details?

Hola Eric!

As far as I know, IB got rid of them as a consequence of the "post-Sept 11th" situation. IB reduced operations and decided that they didn't need those aircraft anymore.

They also delayed the delivery of many A320-family aircraft.

Both 767s went to Kenya Airways after leaving Iberia on December 2001.
EC-GSU became 5Y-KQV and EC-GTI became 5Y-KQW.

Currently both aircraft are flying with Air Canada as C-GHPF and C-GHPH respectively.

Hermano!!! Que pasa!!!?

Hope you're doing well!

I see regarding the post 9/11 situation. Do you know if they were slated to receive any more? They just seemed like such a good aircraft to keep, specially for the Peninsula-Canarias routes. Seem like 747's and A340/3/600's are a bit too much for those routes.

Regards and abrazos.

Knowing IB is very airbus doesn't surprise me they dropped their 767's.

Too bad they didn't replace them by A330's

Additionally, IB dropped a whole lot of other leases at that time, e.g. UX-operated B733, B734 and B757, which were flying on behalf of the national carrier in IB colors.

One B767-300 was used on BCN-JFK route. That flight was dropped in 2001 due to post 9/11 scenario and low-yields even if that route was subsidized by catalonian government.

Don't forget that IB has had a "4engines 4 long haul" for a long time so neither 767s nor A330s really fitted in their fleet plans.
