YYZ Plane Slides Off Runway? Is It True?

Mon May 22, 2006 7:29 am

Did a plane slides off a runway in YYZ? I just hear this from a friend... is this true?

Everyone ok?

I also just got an SMS from a friend saying that a plane was blown off of 33L. But that is all the detail.

Heya,

If you are talking about the AF A340 that overran the airport last year, then yes.

Here are some Pics:

Heard no news of this while working this morning at T2, might have happened after I left as the winds did pick up quite a bit earlier this afternoon, I know they were using N/S runways for arrivals and departures.

interesting to see if this is true, anyone else here anything????

Hey Mike,

thanks for sharing those pics anyway, I had never seen some of them until just now.
As for the topic at hand, I can't find anything on any of the local news sites yet, but the weather in Toronto looks pretty miserable (rain/high winds), so it makes sense that something could have happened.

Regards,

Never tell your girlfriend about all the 'action' you're getting at the airport - only photogs understand that.

I heard it was just a Citation that slid off a taxiway, and there's nothing on the news, gtaa's website, or anything like that. Doesn't look like anything serious has happened, thankfully. On the other hand, nothing worth going to YYZ for either  Wink I was just about to get in the car!

Can't find anything either - the most recent advisory notice from GTAA was 2 days ago about strong surface winds necessitating the use of 33R/33L.

Any updates would be appreciated.

I heard that it was just a Cessna 550 Citation with 2 or 3 people aboard..

All is fine, and plane has been towed off Rwy 33L.
I like British Airways! I'm not sure why, but I do! ;-)

I was at YYZ today from about noon, through to just a little after 3:30.

Traffic was landing 33L, departing 33R.

There were lots of comments on the ATC from the pilots indicating that there was lots of windsheer at about 3,000 feet.. one pilot commented that they lost 10 knots when they flew through some windsheer.

Other pilots commented that the wind on the runway was very strong.

I can personally say that the wind was rocking my car at the IFT quite hard. It was hard to take any pictures today, due to the wind pushing me around.

Glad everyone is okay.

Hearing back the archive in liveatc.net, the Citation seems to have 'skidded' off at around 4:50pm EDT or so. The arrival control is switching everyplane for 33L to 33R at that time. Since I heard nothing on the arrival control about this plane at all at arrival channels before this, I presume/guess it is on the ground taxiing rather than skidded off after landing.

And yes, it is very windy in Toronto at that time. METAR shows 300 degree 26 Gusting 31 Knots
