Business Class With Flat Beds

Which airlines have J class seats that transform into fully flat beds?

We are evaulating whether to go business class to NZ next time, and whether NZ, SQ, CX, EK or BA/QF would be the best way to go in J. From what I can see, only NZ and BA have fully flat beds in J, the others have at best a seat that goes flat on an incline (a "sleeperette" seat).

I reckon NZ (on the NZ1 LHR-LAX-AKL route) will be the best bet, but didn't know what the others offered?

NZ would be the only way to New Zealand in a flat bed the whole way. Either stopping in LAX or in the future HKG will be a possibility.

BA and VS could get you there with a connection in SYD.

SQ, CX, EK, QF are all lie-flat (angled seats).

IF flat beds are essential I would take NZ (only one stop). BA and VS would be two stops and the last sector would not be flat bed.

QF and EK would also be two stops (not flat bed, but lie-flat instead). EK can be a bit dodge with LHR-DXB in business. some of these seats are old.

SQ, CX would be just one stop (no flat bed, lie-flat instead).

Take NZ, sign up for BMI's diamond club and become i believe star alliance gold with just that return flight (38,000 miles qualification on BMI).

We're already Diamond Club members - wow sounds like a good deal, plus we'd have the J class MAN-LHR (although we're only doing it all one way but it still won't hurt our balance with bmi).

Depending on when you are travelling, it may be better to take the new LHR-HKG-AKL route and avoid the hassles of going through LAX.

Air Canada will have their flat beds installed this year on 767-300s and A330s plus on their new 777s and 787s. AC will have the first 767-300ER with new lie flat suite in June of this year.

hi ! There is NO DOUBT that best beds are SQ ones. They are perfect ! IF you fly 744 , go upperdeck, if 777 avoid middle seats (3 together)

There's no doubt they are NOT. The seats aren't even FLAT. Just those lie flat slippery slopes everybody seems to have.

I've flown Business on BA, QF and CX and, for long haul flights, I prefer the BA seats for comfort and privacy - especially the window seats.

If you're looking at a Business fare between LHR and AKL it might be interesting to look at RTW fares. You would need to research where you can get the best fares (look under Global Alliances at http://flyertalk.com/milesfr.shtml for some comparison of fares in different countries) as you can save over £1,000 per ticket - as well as getting to try a lot of different airlines along the way. I take this approach because I hate flying west to east on long haul flights - as well as being cheap.

You're talking horizontal 180 degree beds right? A lot of carriers have seats that go flat, but very few horizontal. NZ is a good choice because their new seats are the same ones on the new VS suites. VS gave them permission I believe. I'm looking forward to seeing the new BA Club seat - I heard that the a/c will be configured First class, WTP, Club, then Economy, as the a/c is slightly wider where the current WTP cabin is.
Breakfast in BHX, lunch in FAO, dinner in TIP, baggage in YYC.

No discussion, go with Air New Zealand.......new lie-flat seats, recently upgraded airplanes, advanced IFE, very nice service, and very convenient one stop service between the UK and AKL.

I have flown the flight several times (have not tried the new seat yet) and the LAX stopover is NO big deal, especially if you are a US, UK or NZ citizen. NZ handles the flights everyday and their staff know exactly what they are doing and the US transit is well managed.

i believe UA is getting them when they reto fit the international fleet with the new seats. i heard they were going to instal the P.S first class seats as J class seats on the 777s and 747s, and possibly 767-300.

Of the mentioned airlines, my only experience is on BA and VS between SFO and LHR, and IMHO, VS's Upper Class stands head and shoulders above BA's current Club World. On VS, you never have to climb over anyone to get to an aisle, and you'll always face forwards.

SAA have the best but they don't fly to NZ, although you could fly LHR-JNB-SYD then take the last hop with someone else!
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

You know, I flew NWA SEA - AMS return in World Business Class in February on the A330-300, and was able to sleep fine in the 176 degree recline seats. I just belted up outside the blankie, put the footrest down, and slept on my side.

Now, the Z fare on NWA was something like USD 2750.00. The C fare on BA was and is something like 4K and change. So, I'm saving approx. $825.00 each way for four degrees of recline from BA. Sure, I'd *love* to fly Club World, but NWA's configuration in WBC is *very* generous and the service is acceptable. I mean, I never had to ring the call bell once during my two ten hour flights. So NWA's sold me on a lie flat, but not 180 degree seat. Until, that is, BA lowers their fares. Besides, NW 34 leaves at 1340 arrives AMS at 0800 and BA 48 leaves SEA around 1840 and arrives LHR at 1200. NW 33 leaves AMS around 1140 and you get back to SEA before noon. BA 49 leaves at 14something and you get back to rush hour traffic coming home.

It's actually 54K miles for BD gold.

I'd recommend joining Air Canada where it's 35K miles to *A gold (Aeroplan Elite). Unfortunately *A generally offers very poor bonus miles (compared to Skyteam 100% bonus when you're gold) for gold members, but that's kind of common to all carriers on the *A.

It is about time too. Harmony Airways is about half the price and their business class is on par or better than AC.

The new flat beds are really nice though.
I remember, the choices were chicken or fish. I had the lasagna.

surpised this topic hasn't been mentioned before  Wink...anyway, my advice would be to avoid ba/qf as the change in syd means a320/767 acrosss the tasman which would have an inferior product. plus 2 stops is overall more hassle.

if you do want to see australia, ek is a good way to go though make sure you book one of the a345 services that are non-stop dxb-australia. if u transit in syd you'll take a 773er to akl. from mel, the same a345 that's come from dxb will continue. but if australia's not on your list, i'd avoid ek because their business product isn't the best and again, there's the extra stop.

as for other carriers, i don't know about nz because i haven't flown them, but bear in mind that their hkg-lhr/lgw route hasn't begun yet...i think.

that leaves sq and cx - my preferences. i think it's important not to over-estimate the flat-beds because there are many more factors in a good c-class product...service, food etc... sq and cx both do very well overall. i'd go with whoever has the best deal, unless ff points are an issue. good luck  Smile

The VS upper class suite is the best seat, it was licenced out to NZ and AC are rolling it out too. It looks as if it is going to become the benchmark. So go for the NZ flight, even if you go via LAX NZ have now made a great deal of change to help with transiting passengers so it's not that bad.

For just bed and seat definitely NZ for catering and inflight entertainment definitely SQ. I have flown NZ new seat rand was very impressed with their seat and lounge but was very unhappy with their inflight service including VERY poor catering in C class and unprofessional F/A staff... I remember three different people, not even traveling together and related to each other asked for purser to complain for poor service (you can search here in forum a topic about that flight it was posted I thing 31st of December) but hopefully they have changed now.

As mentioned above, try to avoid BA/QF as you might need to do three stops and then end up on A320 for the last leg.

If you prefer *A miles then I would suggest LHR/SIN on SQ (B747) and then SIN/AKL in NZ (B777)

26 hours isn't actually too bad with the stop in the middle - at least you can stretch your legs between gates. I've done LHR-HKG-AKL in 26 hours, AKL-SIN-ZRH-MAN in 30 hours. Try 16 hours crammed against the window in a full SQ 747 (SIN-ZRH-MAN)!

Before I did those flights I thought 26 hours would be a nightmare, but actually if you have the right frame of mind (it's not 26 hours crammed in a tube, it's 26 hours of chilling out, sleeping, watching TV, eating whenever you want and drinking beer), then it makes it a lot easier to cope with! It flies by in no time in my experience.

Upper class is VS's first class so it would not fit this thread's topic. Regardless, BA's club world is just as good as Upper Class, with BA's actual First class well ahead.

Incorrect, Virgin Upper Class is a business class product.

Don't know who told you that, Skytrax has voted the SA seat the world's best 2 years running. IB also got the top rating.

Why don't you fly London to Helsinki, then to BKK/SIN or HKG on Finnair?

You get flat beds in Business Class, some of the best wines in the world, and you get to fly on the MD-11.

Connect in BKK/SIN or HKG with QF, CX, NZ, etc.
