Emirates Considers Cancelling A346 Order!

Mon May 22, 2006 9:38 pm

Hey A.Netter's,

Just came across some disturbing news while reading the latest Airliner World Magazine.  Sad
Emirates chairman Sheikh Ahmed is considering cancelling its outstanding $4.2billion order for up to 20 Airbus A340-600's. He states that he is considering looking at deferring the A340-600's. The chairman also states that he is considering buying additional A380-800's.
Another lose for Airbus and the A340 program I must say if Emirates goes ahead and cancels this A340 order.  Sad

Although having said that I bet Airbus would trade 340 orders for 380 orders any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

The EK order for the A346 includes aircraft directly ordered from Airbus plus additional aircraft via ILFC - 20 in total sounds correct.

Airbus would like nothing more than to sell additonal A380s - but the cancellation of the A346 order is a problem as the A340 backlog is rather small and the entire program is losing momentum. The A345/346 program has been problematic for Airbus and a cancellation by EK certainly will not help.

Ah, but this is EK, normal logic does not apply! Airbus already operates an A332/343/345/772A/772ER/773A/773ER fleet, with 772LRs on order, so adding the A346 would not be a very big deal. Part of the rationale behind EK's rather diverse fleet was and continues to be their need to acquire aircraft quickly to expand....at some point in the future, we will see some fleet rationalization.

But what you say is very true, EK already has the 773ER in its fleet, from what we hear is very impressed and happy with the variant, and that is performance exceeds all expectations......thus, it does make sense to settle on the 773ER and pass on the A346 which has had its performance issues. The problem is that EK does have a committments with Airbus and ILFC to acquire the A346.

-----------

Will EK every accept delivery of the A346? From the beginning, I had my doubts and now, more than ever, I really think that EK will find a way to get out of its commitment to the A346. There are just too many issues concerning the order - and now we have Airbus talking about offering a possible A350/370-1000 variant as part of the new and improved A350 family that would make the A346 obsolete. My guess is that the now delayed EK A346 order will be quietly cancelled in conjuntion with EK either placing an order for additional A380s or making the commitment to go with one or more variants of the new A350/370.

VS: "Mine bigger than yours"
EK: "Mine not big enough, but more loaded than yours"

Swapping 346 for 388, geez, EK must be doing fine in terms of loads...

Why would they do this when Clark has stated that Airbus faces hurdless in the delivery of there first A380?

Clark also says Airbus faces “huge hurdles” to meet its April 2007 target to deliver the first Engine Alliance GP7200-powered A380, of which Emirates is launch operator. “I don’t believe for a moment it won’t be tough,” he says. “So far, it’s so good, but cabin integration is an enormous challenge. If it is looking to go beyond that time we have asked them to be as candid as possible with us. But nothing would surprise us.”

Perhaps the B-747-800I will fit into EKs fleet? Apparently everything else does.

No, it doesn't. A332, B772, B772ER, B773, B773ER and A345 complement each other well. The used A343s were introduced temporarily due to a shortage of aircraft. And the A346 will most likely never join the fleet. Additionally, EK has declared some time ago it wouldn't be interested in an updated B747.

Check the Chinese carriers if you are searching for truly diversified fleets.

Does that include all variants or is there a way they could still get the 747-8 as a freighter for EK Skycargo, to operate alongside the A380F?

If I recall correctly, they were only referring to the pax aircraft, so yes, the freighter would be an option. It's very likely EK will search for a new generation of freighters after the recent conversion of the two A380F orders into pax orders.

Thanks for the info, PH. It probably makes sense for EK to look for possible alternatives given the A380F's delay.

I guess you'd have to ask the person that said it... See below.

given the A380F's delay.

Delay, there is no A380F delay other than the overall "program program," "it just sounds like a new A380F delay."

EK cancelling 340-600 orders and orders 380 instead - it's a lose (but why "another") for the 340, not for Airbus.

It is a bonus for the A380 program BUT for the A340 it is indeed a great lose as Airbus really doesnt have much to offer at this stage to compete with the B777 & B787....We cant really say the A350 is a life saver....A majority of the carriers have purchased B787's....
