Condor Selling Emergency Seats!

Mon May 22, 2006 11:57 pm

German airline Condor is now offering their seats at the emergency exits charging Euro 20 for shorthaul and 40 for longhaul flights ! They call it XL-Seats.

In terms of safety a horrible idea, knowing that someone who ist physically not able to handle the exit in case of an emergency can now bokk this seat in advance. Most overweight people will use this offer.
I just see this as a further attempt to make money.

What do you think ? Is that a good idea ?

I'm fairly certain that Condor IS in the business to make money. Their seats are their product. They're for sale at whatever price the market will bear.

Of course it's a tacky idea but if customers are willing to pay extra for those seats, more power to Condor.

I don't know any airline that does not sell the seats at emergency exits. If Condor is able to charge a premium price for those seats, why not?

The Condor regulations on these seats are pretty much identical to the regulations on any other airline:

Quote from Condor website page on XL Seats:

Important information

This service is only available on Condor flights with a Condor flight number (DE) and a Condor aircraft. XL Seats cannot be reserved on flights operated by other airlines.

No reservations can be made for infants or children under 12 years of age.

Due to government security regulations, passengers may not be seated at the emergency exit if they are:

- Infants and children under 12 years of age
- Accompanied on board by children under 12 years of age, infants or pets
- Expectant mothers
- Physically and/or mentally disabled
- Limited in their ability to move due to age, illness or body size

You must be willing to assist the crew in an emergency. Our check-in personnel and the flight crew are required to verify the information for security reasons. Our personnel reserves the right to move you if appropriate. Please note that your carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead compartments above your seat during take-off and landing.

yes, as indicated, Condor may deny such a seat to a pax who booked it in case they are not able to handle the emergency exit properly.

absolutely a good idea! apparently, there are other airlines that do that. I only know of VirginBlue and I think it's pretty good thing! pay for what you use-policy. want frills? no problem, but you've got to pay for it! it earns the airlines some additional money at zero cost.

personally and from a passenger point of view, i think it really pays-off on flights of more than two hours or so.
If only pure sweetness was offered, why's this bitter taste left in my mouth.

You bet: Thomsonfly "Extra Seating" is exactly this but for £65 (granted with better service)

Most short haul "Premium" or equivalent upgrades are usually just exit row seats with better food etc.
