Being A Commercial Pilot!

I am 25 years old. (Ssssh don't tell anyone) My life long dream was to be a commercial pilot. But due to financial constraints I was not able to pursue that dream. I am however about to start something I like almost as much and would be finished when I am 29. If I do find myself in the financial position to start my aviation career at that age, would I be too old to complete it and actually get hired by an airline. I know most airlines have an age range for new hire pilots. Anyone is knowledgeable in this area?

Your not too old to fly in America, you could easily go to the Regionals if you have the time. I think your best bet would be to start out now with your Private, then your Instrument, then Multi and Commercial.. so it's not all in one big shot, and it will be easier on your pockets as well. Then maybe Flight Instruct, b/c thats all the regionals are really looking for these days b/c everyone has a CFI. After that do the 135 Cargo deal, then on to the Regionals and eventually to a Major. From what I understand (and being in the process myself at 36), it will change what area of commercial flying you'll be able to get into.

At 36, pretty much I can work in the regionals, or in corporate aviation. I probably am too old to be jet captain (737/A319, etc) as the turbine time requirements are pretty high. Are you aiming for a particular carrier? Or are you just interested in commercial flying? There are several avenues to look at such as freight, regional, corporate, etc.

Thanks for the responses. I have absolutely no problems flying regionals (I just want to fly commercially). Additionally, flying for a cargo company the likes of Amerijet, Fedex, UPS etc. would also be a super opportunity. Thanks for the advice though. Getting my wings will still be my dream.  Smile

I would rule out Fedex, and UPS... UPS has 15,000 resumes on file, all waiting for a Pilot position.

Some things to consider if you want to be a regional pilot: Most places you go to
will not be too exciting. Staying at hotels away from home is the worst part of the job. The pay is very low. I know garbage men that make more money. And to second what C5onknees said getting a job at UPS or FedEx is just as hard as getting on with a major. Sorry to sound glum, but you need a reality check before you make a big decision.

I was reading earlier today that yesterday a 91 year-old in England has wanted to get his PPL and has now just got around to do it, he flew solo yesterday for the time. He may be only going for his PPL, but just shows you can never be too old.

Im training to be a commercial pilot, but only at the PPL stage myself, I just completed my solo circuits last week and am moving to navigation now.

I just turned 17 yesterday and have a similar feeling like yourself except the opposite, will I be too young, will airlines look at age, I hope not!

My personal oppinion is, if you can do it, why not?

You may want to grab tha last issue of the FLYING magazine. In this issue you will find Les Abend who is a 767 captain discussing the whole aviation career from the financial point of view. Very interesting read.

You live in Mexico I expect you are a Mexican resident and hold a Mexican passport? If so unless you move to the US than chances you can really become a pilot in the US, and why anyone would want to be a pilot in the US I dont know, the state of the industry is horrible right now and pilots are making less and less money. First get your PPL and see how you like it, than continue with flight trainning after that, but you need to take it one step at a time, unless you go through some fast pace program dont start thinking about the airlines yet.
I think chances of flying mainline airliners in Mexico are better? I not sure how the industry is doing there.
Becoming a commercial pilot is a hard long process. And you make no money while doing it. If you have a good job right now making money than the right thing to do is stay with it and not try to become a pilot, but as many of us know like myself there is just something special about flying for a job and for some it does not matter how little they get paid they want to do it. If you decide to presue flying 100% make sure you really love it. And PLEASE! Get your PPL first. Than make the decision.

Actually I am not mexican, but I do live and study here. I am from the caribbean, and that limits me to Air Jamaica, BWIA, Caribbean Star and LIAT as major caribbean airlines. There are one or two other little operations here and there. BUt there are lots of young caribbean pilots looking for work right now. I can legally live in the US so it also an option. But you are right the industry is really messed up right now, in US and in the Caribbean. JM and BW really have issues and being small airlines, job opportunities are not readily available. Seems like recreational flying would be the direction I and many others will take.  Smile

You are not old at all. Before 9/11, the average hiring age for the majors in the US was 37 years old. If you are only 25, you have a lot of time, trust me.

Avoid being a commercial pilot. 10,000 furloughed pilots, rising oil prices, loss of pensions and job security, loss of benefits, and not to mention the salaries are going down before going up. Plus even if you do make it getting to the Major airlines is very tough, there are thousands and thousands of pilots that are over qualified with 5000 hours of PIC who can't get jobs because nobody needs them at the majors. Find yourself a job or industry where you know it will be there when you retire and have job security. You can always fly for fun, in fact most who go get their licenses never pursue flying as a career.

That's why not everyone does it, b/c it's not easy, but if it is what you want, go for it. You are definitely not to old. I think most guys hired at the US majors are in their upper 30s...And a lot of regional new hires are that old as well, b/c the more life expereinces one has, typically the better their aviation judgement is.

If your life long dream is to be a pilot, then there are plenty of places in the world where you can achieve that goal. The United States has a huge population of pilots. Many people pursue their dream to be pilots. However if you look at other parts of the world, it is a lot different. The Indian airlines for example struggle to have enough qualified pilots with their rapid expansion and the shortage there of new up and coming pilots. Emigrating might be the way to do it, but that is a huge lifestyle change.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

29 is definately not too old for a air transport pilot career.

The best thing to do is just start now. However, do your PPL and then see how you feel about going further.

By the way, remember that jumpseat A380 trip we were talking about?  wink

Sad but true. I am still in High School but will soon have to make a decsion on what to do with my life, and almost everyone has said fly for fun and get a better more secure career like Management, Medicine. I still not sure what I will do yet.
