Anything Still Stored At LAS?

Tue May 23, 2006 10:55 am

Going to LAS on Thursday for the 1st time in about two years. Wondering are any A/C still stored at or near LAS?

How far is Victorville from LAS? Is it worth the drive?

My flights down and back a packed on US/HP. Does US/HP bump? If so and I offer my seat when will I get to Vegas? What is HP's policy on this?

Thanks!!!

I was out there about 2 months ago, and sadly it looks as though all the old birds are now gone. I used to visit the west side of the airport weekly to look at the old birds out there. Sadly, looks like it is history.

Victorville is about 2-3 hours. I could not tell you what is out there, because it has been years since I have been there. Kingman might be a good spot to drive to. Not sure what they have out there anymore, but it may be worth the drive.

Yes, HP/US still offers bumps. Usually they offer vouchers for $$ off of future travel. Depends on how desperate they are. They used to offer free tickets and cash when things were getting hairy.

Hope that helps ya a little.

Last month they were offering free tickets and not vouchers at least on the cross country flights out of PHX and FLL.

They were last night.
I believe it's a voucher for a free round trip in the lower 48, and hotel stay as well.

The storage area at LAS is gone and now has a concrete manufacturing area set up in the area. The airport is quite busy though as far as "moving" aircraft..As for nearby storage:

Victorville- About 2 1/2 hours by car, but photography quite difficult

Kingman- About 2 hours by car and a little better for photography

Boulder City- About 1/2 hour away. There was an Eagle F-27 stored there, but I am not sure if it is still there. Occasionally, you can catch some Albatross' flying in and out of there

Finally, there are abunch of WWII fighters at a location south on Highway 95 on the way to Searchlight about 1 hour from Vegas, but I do not recall the city name

Which flight are you scheduled on? We have 5 flights that go from SEA-LAS. Usually, the SEA flights are not that full, plus they could accomodate you on AS or WN worst case scenario.

Before I tell you whether or not VCV is worth the drive, my first question, is why the hell would you want to go there in the first place? You'll see the same aircraft there as you would at VGT and that's only about a 15 minute drive from McCarran (depending on traffic, of course). If it's nature and mountains that you're into, visit Red Rock, just southwest of the city, plenty of beautiful mountains and great hiking trails, and the perfect getaway during the summertime.

VGT is a nice little airport with some DHC-6s, Do-228s and such, certainly worth a visit, but at VGT I have never seen the loads Lockheed Tristars and 727s which are stored at Victorville so what do you mean with 'the same aircraft" ?

Sorry, did not realize VCV was a storage site for some heavies. However, the airport just outside Kingman (don't know the name of it) has quite the selection of heavies too and that's a shorter drive than VCV, as well as a more scenic one.

I was @ both VCV and IGM earlier this month. VCV has nothing being scrapped by the 'hill' . Only descent shots I got were what's left of a Tower 747 at a srap yard that's on the same road as the 'hill' .
IGM wasn't that great, especially since they installed that new fence 3 years ago .
