Dash 8 Q400

Tue May 23, 2006 2:27 pm

SA Express Airways took delivery of Africa's first Q400 two weeks ago and I had the chance to fly on it last night. Standing on the tarmac it looks very long and thin but the 6 blade props look the business! On board it looks even longer, but the 33" pitch is quite comfortable and the seats okay despite looking very thin and flimsy. The takeoff roll was very short for JNB at 5,500ft ASL (we were 52 pax in a 74 seater) and the climbout and ride is much quieter than the 300.

Sitting across the aisle from me was a Bombardier engineer who told me that he had been riding with the plane since delivery while they shake out any problems. He said it takes about 6 weeks to "settle the plane" but that he might stay for up to a year.

Overall the flight was great apart from the cabin temperature which got hotter and hotter through the 40 minute flight, the engineer said to the FA that the cabin temperature was regulated partly by sensors in the cabin and that one of them might be faulty.

I did notice 2 funnies that had nothing to do with the aircraft, the emergency card had the word EMERGENGY and the in flight magazine said the plane has leather seats which it doesn't!

Anyone else got any impressions of the Q400, good or bad?

I flew on one for the first time about 2 months ago. I honestly didn;t really have a excessively positive or negative experience. It feels like any other turboprop on the inside, but it looks oh so cool on the outside. It also doesn't really feel any roomier than the Q200 on the inside unless you are sitting in the last few rows.

I'd say the best part was that I was on Horizon Air, and they serve free Beer from local microbreweries!

I flew the Dash 8 Q400 last Sunday from ARN to AMS on SK. We had a two hour tech delay for some reason, but I must say the plane is comfortable spacious (legroom!!) and has leather seats. SK has my vote.

I just took my first DH4 last weekend on a Horizon flight from PDX to GEG and it was quite enjoyable. My prop experiances before hand were on the ATR-42, Saab-340 and EMB-120 all of which I disliked but this plane was no worse than a CRJ and because I was on Horizon, the service was excellent.

I just flew BIL-SEA on a QX Q400. Everytime I fly on a Q400 I am always impressed with how quiet the interior is, and how excellent the QX service is.

I like them. The slim and slender fusalage looks nice, and the props complement it! I only wish UP had the money to get some of these  Smile

I read that the Q-400 saves 3 million USD on a sub-500 mile route compared to a CRJ-700. Also the article said that the Q-400 has a brekeven at 30 pax and makes a profit with less seats compared to a CRJ-700  thumbsup

I flew one on QX LAX-RNO-LAX. I was impressed with the feel of the aircraft, it was more like a jet than anything. It was spacious, clean, and well lit. Still, I prefer a CR7 but its a great aircraft.

Is this SOP for many/most airlines/manufacturers with new deliveries? Or is SA a special case; maybe they requested the presence of the engineer?

Agree with you on that one!

As for me, I have yet to fly on a Q400, though I've enjoyed a hop on one of its older siblings with US. They really are wonderful little turboprops. Big grin

If he's on board when I fly home tonight (the timetable says it will be the Q400 again) I'll ask him!

I've been on a Q400 with Flybe several times now and I really like them, spacious, airy and bright and not too noisy either, big thumbs up from me!

Nothing to report I'm afraid, I caught an earlier flight and flew back on the -300!

Flybe's Q400's seem to suffer from a lot of tech problems, primarily when they are due to fly in or out of LBA! we were told one night by FlyBe personnel in SOU that the plane wasnt expected in until 10pm if not later , and the time was 8.30 due to severe weather conditions in SOU so we announced it to the pax who wernt too happy ...the plane touched down at 9pm making us look like fools, and it turned out the plane was tech, not adverse weather!

I must say I like the Q400. I've been on FlyBe GLA - BHX a couple of times. I like the way you can see the tyres hitting the runway!

I would suggest that this issue is more to do with comms problems between the airline and your organisation. Speak to a Manager and get them to detail what you've said in the next Airport Manager's meeting with the airline in order to suggest a way to improve communications between the two.

In fact, think of something yourself prior to mentioning it, so that you've got something positive to add as opposed to you comments just being perceived as a complaint!
