Alitalia replaces its 747 and M11?

Wed Feb 17, 1999 9:37 pm

Alitalia' long haul fleet is getting old. Does anyone knows if Alitalia has already announced if will order A330/A340 or B744/777 in order to replace its old 747 and the MD11?

I hardly see any need for Alitalia to be replacing the MD-11 yet, it most certainly is not old. Even the first MD-11 to ever enter service is today only 8 years 2 months old.

Their has been news though of replacements. I believe it was the 767/777 against the A330/340.

The MD-11 does not need replacements, however there 747s do. I think they should convert all of there 747s to freighters and use it with the alliance with KLM and Northwest to make a huge cargo airline. The MD-11s well I dont know what to do with them, if they want to replace them I think they should go with the 777 since they have the 767, but I heard they are not really very happy with the 767s. So if they are going to replace most of their fleet like what they did during the 50s and 60s, they should replace the MD-11 with A340-500/600, the 767 with A330-200 their MD80's with more A320s and A321.

Their 747-300s are getting glass cockpits which will make them better than the A340-500/600 series. As for the rest of your statement I guess you really like Airbus!

I don't see how installing a 747-300 with a glass cockpit will somehow transform it in to a better plane then the A340. It still won't have nearly the range.

AZ 747-300?

Wait, doesn't Alitalia just have the 747-200? I'm sure they also still have 747-200F freighters.

I agree with Drew. Alitalia should go Airbus!
The A330 and A340 would be beautiful in Alitalia's colours. An all Airbus fleet would be great.
However I do like the 767 and MD-11 as well and I really think that they should keep these two types for a while, like MD-11 said the MD-11 is young.

The A340-500 and 600 isn't still flying and you already think that the 747-300 will be better just because will receive glass cockpits.
You really like the 737 ooooops, sorry, I mean the 747.

It is my fault. For some reason or another I thought we were talking about KLM. Alitalia should restructure their fleet, but I feel the 747/777 is a better combination of aircraft for their fleet than the A330/340. For the routes that KLM flies their 747-300s they are looking for a high capacity aircraft that can also carry a large amount of cargo. Looking at the stats on the A340-500/600 the 747-300 beats them in capacity and cargo. They do operate cheaper most likely though.

Complement

Thu Feb 18, 1999 5:56 am

Particularly, I doubt Alitalia will order 744, because if they had it in mind, they should already have done it a long time ago. Nowadays
just airlines that already operate 744 are buying more in order to complement/expand its services e.g. BA and JAL. But there is a long time that an airline which doesn't already operate B747-400 order it.
The 767 as far as I know, were intruduced in their fleet as an agreement between then and Ansett Australia. But, on the other hand, I read Alitalia ordered 3 more... directly to Boeing, as the results presented on its operation are very positives to Alitalia.
On the short haul sector, they are ordering A320 family to replace its decadent MD80 and DC9. And, as the main objective of an airline today is to form a fleet consisted with the less models that is possible, and with the bigger flexibility possible, I sincerely don't know what would be the place of the 763 in a fleet that seems to be entire Airbus in the future.

CX747 I agree with you

I agree with you about the A340-500/600 as a replacement for their 747-300 I think they should keep them until they can replace them with 400C and or they should consider the A3XX to replace the 744 and in turn the 744 will replace the 743. The 743 is going through a flight deck change. I wonder how it looks like right now.

I think they are replacing the 747's. To my knowledge they are quite happy with the MD-11. I have seen the 767-300 at LAX though, undoubtedly an aircraft swap for the MD-11. But i do believe they will keep the MD-11 for sometime to come

Two thoughts about Airbus: 1.consistently underpowered when compared with Boeing, and; 2: Don't try ever to go around or you'll end like Nagoya or like that airbus at the Paris airshow.

I would replace Alitalia's 747-200s with 777-200s and the MD-11's (which I don't feel need replacing) with 747-200ERXs. Personally though, I see nothing wrong with their fleet as it is right now.

I personaly don't think Alitalia should replace it's MD11s, these aircraft are some of the newest aircraft on it's fleet. Regarding the 747-200's - yes these aircraft are getting a bit old, but, I Don't think they should be replaced by any thing else but other 747s. For years the 747 has represented prestige and elegance in any airline's fleet- people who dont know (anything) about aviation know about the 747. "Try saying that about a 2- engine airbus".The fact that euro.gov.mt's are putting pressure on their airlines to "just" buy all airbus aircraft sickens me. But i will agree- If Alitalia does get $$$ from the Italian gov. to upgrade ther fleet they should go ahead and replace their fleet of MD80/DC9 aircraft with all Airbus equipment, i do agree that Airbus makes great aircraft, and that the similar crew layout between the Airbus aircraft families is a good thing, versatility wise, for Alitalia. But LEAVE the 747's & MD11's on their current routes. If Alitalia isn't happy with the MD11 & 767 aircraft they should sell them off and invest that money in newer 747s for those routes. Basically I Don't think Alitalia should get rid of the 747 in it's fleet, and if that does happen i'm sure that some will agree - the Alitalia 747 will be greatly missed in international destinations world wide.

If anyone out there has any definite info on what Alitalia will do with it's fleet - especially about the 747s- please fill every one in on it. Thanks in advance,DV.
