Lukashenko Threatens To Ban Overflights

Wed May 24, 2006 3:22 pm

MINSK (Reuters) - President Alexander Lukashenko suggested on Tuesday that he might ban Western overflights of Belarus in response to sanctions against his former Soviet state in connection with his disputed re-election.

"Let them fly over the Baltic states or Ukraine. We ought to close the main route through," Lukashenko told parliament in his annual state of the nation address.

Hey, no loss there comrade Alexander.  Yeah sure I'm sure the Baltic countries and/or Ukraine won't mind additional income from increased air traffic.

How much of an effect will this have on European airlines? Those are the ones who would bicker the most, how used are routes over Belarus?

That would really affect some high density routes, such as WAW-SVO and PRG-SVO. The latter is a pretty high frequency route for both CSA and Aeroflot, and goes directly over the middle of Belarus. It would definitely add some significant distance, probably a couple hundred miles to route the flights to the north or south.

I flew CSA on the PRG-SVO-PRG route just a couple of years ago, kind of weird thinking it might have to be a longer flight all of a sudden.

What if an airliner was flying with a fighter escort over there? Wouldn't it help?

It will be even more strange when the CSA flight PRG-SVO takes half an hour longer than the Aeroflot flight...

Under agreement Belarus FIR extend 1 mile all around into there neighbour countries.

There's alot of main routes from North to South that cross Belarus FIR.

A Big Loss to Belarus Finances if this does happen.

VIE-SVO, MUC-SVO as well.
its routed directly over Minsk, which gives a nice sight during the night. But if that bloke cant help it, let him have his way.

Yeah, that's really gonna show the West, breaking aviation bilaterals  Yeah sure . I'm sure some airlines will have to reroute their flights, but I seriously doubt that other than that this threat will have any effect at all, let alone force the EU and others to be more friendly towards Lukashenko.

Lukashenko is a loud-mouthed malcontent, someone who punches above his weight. When his finance minister tell how much it's going to cost him, he'll see the light. It's all smoke.

Lukashenko is a moron, as it will be another significant financial hit. Their economy is basically being subsidized by Russia, which provides low cost energy. He wasn't very cooperative with Russia, so if they set up market gas prices for him, his country goes down.

Don't be silly. If this idea will actually be implemented, then you should be put onboard of either the escort fighter or the airliner that is being escorted. I want to see your facial expression when you will hear a warning of incoming SA missiles.

Well, actually, western countries broke agreements first, as a sign that they did not accept his government:

Lukashenko's latest comment was almost certainly in response to last month's refusal by Canada and the United States to refuel a plane carrying Belarus's prime minister to and from Cuba.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. Lukashenko went from raising cows to runing the country, and he filled all key government positions with morons from his village. So it's not like the finance minister is any smarter than him.

And a good thing too. Somebody needs to get that guy out of there and let Belarus enjoy some prosperity and growth that its neighbors are experiencing. Ugh, I shudder with anger when I read about that man.

(As an aside, I did fly Belavia once in 2002. It actually wasn't too bad [except for the food], I flew on a Tu-134 WAW-MSQ and back. Flights were very smooth and comfortable.)

I agree, this is all smoke. The last thing Lukashenko wants to do is give the EU/US another reason to put on pressure. He's better off if he stays quiet and not really piss off the big guys. If it weren't for Russia, I'm sure he would have been "removed" by now.

I don't think it will be a big deal to bypass Belarus. It is not a huge country like China or Russia. You will have to re-plan some routes (and not simply go 'around" Belarus) but it should not add significant distance.
Lukashenko is an idiot. Let him brew in his own sauce.

I've just read that the ban is only for USA and Canada, that has denied Belarussian state airplane a fuel stop some time ago. Are there any US/Canadian routes at all going over there?

I think the reason is what Cloud mentioned earlier. Banning (I presume not too frequent) flights of Canadian and US a/c from the airspace of Belarus will make him look "tough" without losig the income from the overflights of European a/c.

I read something about this guy on landings.com....he's a nutcase. I feel bad for anyone living in that country. Noty mentioning his wackiness, banning US and Canadian overflights would make the country lose money in fee's and taxes. The guy's an idiot.

So really, the only flight that would be forced to reroute at all, even if just 50-100 miles, would be DL's JFK-KBP service. Yeah, 1 flight, that is really gonna show the US and Canada  Yeah sure .

The ban will only apply to US and Canadian airlines.

is a source for this (in Finnish).

Anyway Lukashenka is effectively dictatorial and I sort of agree with these sanctions imposed on him and his assistants.
