The fire is HUGE, must have been some type of explosion assosiated with its start.

Almost the whole terminal building is burning.

The fire is in the terminal, started about 30 mins ago, people are trying to escape right now. I'm worried if the fire reaches some of the fully fueled aircraft at the gates. Holy crap that'll blow big.

The fire seems to be limited to the Cargo terminal where it started.

Only the cargo terminal has been closed for operations at the moment, according to CNN.

For those not near a TV - CNN.com

Just a quick blurb about aircraft landing in a different area of the airport. I'm sure they'll update as they get more info.

Huge fire at Istanbul airport

Wednesday, May 24, 2006; Posted: 8:59 a.m. EDT (12:59 GMT)

The fire on Wednesday broke out in the cargo section of the international Ataturk airport. No injuries have yet been reported but a line of ambulances was standing by.

There was no word on the cause of the blaze but Kaya Heyse, a producer for CNN's sister network CNN Turk, said some officials suggested it could have been accidental.

Thick plumes of smoke billowed high into the air, television footage showed. Hayse said the smoke could be seen from all over Istanbul.

He said the fire was being contained in the cargo C section of the airport but it was threatening a hotel near the airport. Firefighters were tackling the blaze from the air and ground.

He said aircraft were continuing to land at other parts of the airport, Hayse said.

" ISTANBUL, Turkey — A huge fire engulfed the cargo section of Istanbul's Ataturk International airport on Wednesday, blocking air traffic and causing hundreds of panicked people to flee, television reports said.

Authorities worked to evacuate thousands of people from nearby terminals as black smoke billowed 100 feet into the air.

A firefighter atop a tall ladder poured a stream of water on the fire, and a plane flew overhead, dropping a payload onto the flames -- apparently fire retardant chemicals. But the flames rose above the building.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear."

The fire apparently started at the cargo terminal right next to the international terminal. There is still a lot of black smoke coming out and the fire brigade and two fire fighting planes are also on duty. They still do not know how it exactly began but they suspect a short circuit. 3 people were injured but nothing very serious it seems. The financial loss is immense they say. The check in etc are being done manually. Officials says the operations are going on normally and there is not much delay due to the fire. They say the fire is now 90% under control.

I will keep you updated on this sad event.

That was not over Ankara but over the aegan sea where greece and Turkey has a disputed zone, they dog fighted there for years and this was bound to happen. Good thing that unlike the world's perception greeks and turks get along well the last decade and both sides reacted to this very carefully.

Hmm if the wind is calm I bet the "black smoke" would billow a helluva lot higher than 100 feet. Maybe the flames going 100 feet high; that would be impressive. I haven't seen video on this yet but if its as fierce as they say, even with winds 010 at 13kts, the smoke should be alot higher than that.

ill give you some trusty info...

MNG cargo, Celebi and Havas, both ground handling buildings have been destroyed, millions of dollars worth of cargo is lost right now...

airport operations have and are going on normally, called the tower 2 times, called my friend who is ATC there, he said they had to hold a few people briefly, nothing major was affected by atc.

There was no fire in any terminal at all,

there was no explosion, it was a few sparks from welding that started the fire...

had it not been for the fire fighting aircraft that the city of Istanbul wet leases yearly, this would have been a very very very bad day for turkey...i can gurantee this from several sources, thank you to them

Now that everything has settled down...

The C-cargo terminal was on fire. It is next to the east side of the international terminal, very close to the airport hotel and VIP lounges..,
I was in the terminal during the fire.

They evacuated gates 214-223, and closed runway 06-24, and started using 36L. (both arrivals and departures)
They pulled out all the parked aircraft to western aprons,

everything is back to normal now, well obviously except the cargo terminal...

3 injuries....

Wow that fire was absolutely massive, the mind boggles at what it must have been like to see it in person. Hopefully those injured recover quickly and I wish them the best.
Good thinking on behalf of whoever called in the water bomber, the CL-415 sure didn't care if it was trees or buildings it was putting out but most people probably wouldn't think of using it for this.
Hopefully the insurance of the airport and freight operators allows everyone to get back on their feet OK.
