Air Canada And Project XM

Fri May 26, 2006 10:41 pm

Air Canada's aircraft interior refurbishment project or project XM has been in full swing for about a month or so. The first A320 to undergo the upgrade should be completed soon, also this month the first B763ER is getting it's new international layout with the lie-flat seats in Executive first . This is great and should enhance AC service tremendously.

AC in the last year or so has been very proactive on the weight and fuel consumption issue. They have stripped down a B767, realized that it looked awful and repainted. Taken away the ladders from avionics bays, put their wine in boxes and start trialing new catering carts. On the other hand, the new in seats, in-seat IFE and power units must add significant weight to a aircraft. I think AC is long overdue for a interior overhaul, but it just seems odd to have introduce weight saving measures along side a project that will see aircraft gain weight. Or did AC intentionally reduce the weight of its aircraft to offset the weight of the new equipment brought on by project XM?

The new seats that manufacturers are producing are lighter than older generation seats airlines are currently using. I would bet that weight savings on the seats would offset any weight gain the IFE equip is adding, making this weight neutral. AC has put a lot of effort into reducing the weight of their aircraft, I doubt they would throw it all away with this project.

I heard that a number of the new seats were damaged in transit at YUL...They were left out in the rain with the plastic wrap torn or missing. They had to be returned.

I am sure this will cause at least one plane to be delayed....

According to AC Horizons, the first A320 to roll out was on May 9th. Do we have any photos posted of the new interior of this aircraft?

Where did your read that? The last picture is dated May 16th in which the seat power packs are being installed. That A320 looks far from done.

The ladders are progressively being removed on narrow body airbuses. The wine in tetra packs was a type trial for a 3 day period on the YUL-CDG route (they obviously picked the most finickity wine route), and the catering carts were type trialed on YUL-CUN flights. No final verdict on the the two latter issues.

No at all. They're actually plusher and more comfortable than the seats that were installed on the 321's and a few 319's/320's which were very stiff. They will be similar to the Embraer seats which are very comfortable.

I hope so. I find the Embraer seats to be very comfortable. If all of the seats across the fleet are as comfortable, I will be one very happy customer!  bigthumbsup

"On Apr. 24, an Airbus A320, fin 238, became the first airplane to enter a Montreal hangar for its makeover. This metal bird is scheduled to roll out of the hangar on May 9, with entirely refurbished interiors for North American Executive Class and network wide Economy Class."

Well, it ain't May 9th. As of May 16th, fin 238 is still looking pretty much gutted.

Any idea what the delay is about, except those couple of seats that got ruined? There where new pitures etc every day for the first week or so, after that a lot of silence and only 1 or 2 updates. Did they stumbe on some unforeseen issues or did they underestimate the work required?

Am I the only person that really doesn't understand why the A320s are getting overhauled and the A340s aren't? I mean, aren't all the Airbuses getting ditched within a short period of time to be replaced with Boeings and Embraers? I could be completely off about this, but it just seems a tad odd. I know about the 777 order which will replace the A340s but I thought the A320 series was going too.

Just the Widebodies are, AC is very satisfied with the A32x series for the time being. The 340's will be the 1st to go when the 777's arrive which is why they aren't being changed.

It's been discussed several times before. First dedicated route will be YYZ/ZRH/DEL.

Does this have anything to do with XM radio?

No...Project XM is short for "Project Extreme Makeover"
