EK Starts Nagoya On 1st Of June 2006

Sat May 27, 2006 6:46 pm

As you all might know, Emirates is going to start flying to Nagoya, Japan as of the 1st of June 2006. This is the second city in Japan for EK. Seems they are doing very well on the Japan Sector. I think it's mostly Cargo.

Does anyone know if EK will be adding a third city in Japan like HND or NRT any time soon? Or are there any other Japanese cities to be added in the pipeline?

Also are we going to see EY and QR follow suit?

It's about time they are starting to operate the route. They have had the rights for quite some time now but they postponed the flight in favor of a second daily JFK rotation, for which they needed the A345 frame. Now they're about to operate NGO with B772s. Many believe that EK was not planning on operating into NGO earlier and only applied for the route in order to prevent other Gulf carriers from getting their hands on the traffic rights.

Hmmmm. Interesting! I can't see QR or EY flying to NGO or any other Japanese destination anytime soon. QR already flies to Osaka, but I can't see them flying to any other destination soon. For that I think EK is way ahead of them!

Then again QR flies to Beijing and Shanghai - where as EK only flies to Shanghai for now.

We shall have to wait and see

AY starts NGO on June 3rd, so there will be nice competition on the Europe-Nagoya route.

HND is, of course, out of the question as the only international flight allowed at HND is Seoul-Gimpo (not ICN). And EK hasn't been able to get any slots from NRT (which I'm very greatful for, since AY has been trying to get more than twice weekly for almost 20 years now...).

EK can't fly to NRT because of the slot problem. The earliest date that EK would be allowed into NRT would be 2009/2010 when the second runway gets lengthened to 2500m.

Outside of NGO & KIX, there is no market for them. If demand warrants, a second daily DXB-KIX could be established, but first the current daily would likely upgauged to a 773ER or A380 when they get a few delivered. I am sure the first few A380s will be put on much more higher demand LHR or SYD runs.

I am totally thrilled about this flight and the AY one. Prices to Europe are just too high. For years we only had LH, then JL/AF started CDG (But that is high priced too). Now we will get EK and AY which will give us yet more options.

EK's flight will start as a 772ER and then be upgraded to a A345 in September.

Not as important but it was announced this week that Eva Air will start TPE-NGO 5x week from July 10 and CI will start KHH-NGO 2x week from July 2.

This will bring 6 carriers (CI, EG, EL, CX, UA and BR) operating flights to Taiwan.

NGO is slowly growing into a nice little place to fly in and out of. Now all we need are a few more flights to North America.

Well, AM is slated to start MEX-TIJ-NGO this summer. Service would be 2x weekly using a 772ER.

Emirates is unlikely to add any additional destinations in Japan aside from NRT. As has been mentioned earlier in this thread, the only reason why EK cannot start NRT is due to lack of available slots. Of course, a revision in the bilateral would also be required -- but i dont think it will be a problem.

The KIX route may not have big volumes but it does get good high yield traffic (O&D and connecting - esp. to Africa). As a result I would not be surprised if they add a 2nd daily (again bilateral revision permitting), before they add bigger aircraft. The most the route goes up to is a B777-300ER -- but this is not likely until 2008/9 when the enough 77Ws featuring the first class suites and J class flat beds are delivered. The existing batch of A380s doesnt include any allocated to KIX.

For NGO spotters, the route will commence with a B772ER low density in June, and upgrade to a daily in July using a mix of B772ER and A345. However on 1 September the route will upgrade to a daily B777-300ER (using A6-EBQ and A6-EBR) before switching to an A340-500 at the end of October. The reason for this is that the switch over of the JFK service - EK203/4 to B77W has been delayed. Note that A6-EBQ and A6-EBR will feature the "suites" in F class and the new J class flat beds.

Can't believe that slipped my mind. That will give us a new connection to North America and South America. Do we have a date for that to start yet? Is it July?

Originally, it was going to start as early as June, but I think the date has been moved back. Since I don't think the flights are yet loaded to the system, I would not expect the flight to launch earlier than August 1st, and I would also not be surprised to see AM move the date back some more.

I will try to get some photos of EK, AY, and AM when they start here. I hope all of these services can be successful.

Much as I would like to see the establishment of that route (I would probably use it pretty soon), I cannot possibly believe that AM will indeed operate MEX NGO this summer. No formal announcement has been made, and the flights are not loaded in the CRS.

Well my friend, you have to believe it, today we are having a meeting about the route specifications from MEX-NGO via TIJ, we are going to discuss the possible destination and enroute alternates, route system on the North Pacific, requirements, regulations and training for the flight crew. There is also a delay to start operations, now they are talking about first half of October.

Quite expected I must say. But it may not be so bad if this gives AM sufficient time to pursue additional pax and cargo contracts (AM already secured Toyota as a customer, right?) and to advertise the flight both in Mexico and in Japan.

Luis, any idea if AM will offer discounts for train tickets between Nagoya or Tokyo (or something to help its passengers get to Tokyo), or if it will try to find someone to codeshare with in flights to/from NGO?

Can you give us more details after the meeting Luis?

We only talked about operational issues like routes, alternates and training because I'm on the operational/training area. Actually I don't know about marketing and codeshares but I've heard that really there is a market, specially cargo. If I've got further information I'll let you know.
