Iberia - New Livery?

Sun May 28, 2006 11:58 pm

Is there any talk of updating IB's livery? They have one of the most dated in Western Europe. From the colors to the script to the logo on the tail it screams the 80's at its best. It reminds me of the old Hawaiian logo that they did away with some years ago - just a different color scheme.

Thoughts?

That was a bit harsh IBERIA747. If you have the apprpriate link let Mkirch72 know. BTW I like IB as it is. Reminds me of AA. It says "Spain" with the colors and crown. Better than Eurowhite and kind of classic IMHO.

In my opinion, the colors are fantastic and the fact that color is abundant is also great. However, the design is a bit dated.

Have been spotting in ZRH this Saturday for a few hours. The IBERIA livery just pops in the eyes. Somehow I like it a lot, the colors show pretty much the mostly warm/ hot regions of Spain.
If IB would really change the livery, they should be careful, not to loose the classic "spirit" of the current livery.

How about some design suggestions from our artists here in A.NET regarding a new IB livery?

Well I think it just depends on how "sensitive" the person is. The truth is that I never thought about being harsh with that, but just in case...I apologize to those who think that it was harsh.

Anyway, the truth is that this forum is full of those "airlines in need of a new livery" threads, of which we see a new one at least once per month....Air France, Iberia, American Airlines, Lufthansa, Alitalia are always mentioned there so I think saying that it's been discussed to death is right...and if you do a search in the polls and preferences area you will see that what I say is true.

Anyway, in addition to the links provided by IberiaA319 I'm giving you 3 more, so you'll be entertained for a while.

Totally agree. I think they shouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken.

Remember that this is a site for aviation enthusiasts and most of us tend to be picky for things like this, but the truth is that more than 90% of the flying public can't even notice the difference between an A340 and a MD-87. However, they can recognize/identify an airline by it's livery more often, and Iberia has one of those easily identifiable schemes.

If there is one thing that I like about Iberia is the livery! It has one of the most recognizable liveries, and changing it would be very risky. Maybe they could change the font (I don't think they should) but not the entire livery.

Leave it the way it is. It shows the colors of the spanish flag, it's bright, it's easily distinguished from far, and it really looks nice on the new A346s! If it aint broken, don't fix it!

Actually the taillogo has the two colours of the Spanish flag (along with the Crown), however the middle stripe on the fuselage is in a lighter shade of red, which isn't part of the Spanish flag.

Iberia's livery is one of the most instantly recognisable ones out there! As soon as you see those colours you immediately think 'Spain'! It's so distinctive and lovely!

Sad day if that ever gets changed.

One can change and adapt a c/s or livery without making it unrecognisable from the previous iteration. There is brand equity and heritage in the current scheme and colour palette so an evolutionary rather than revolutionary approach to change would be appropriate in my mind.

Overall I do think it looks a little dated and tired, in need of refreshment!

Changing the livery doesn't mean changing what makes it stand out. From the posts I've read so far, the colors of the Spanish flag and perhaps the crown are what people like the most.

I think it would be nice to upgrade the livery. Think of El Al's new livery - same color scheme but it has been "modernized".

Quoting Goodbye, "Iberia's livery is one of the most instantly recognisable ones out there!",

Did you know that the Spanish flag was chosen in a contest opened by King Carlos III in 1785 because the many different flags used by Spanish ships were easily confused in battle with other contenders. The flag which was chosen, the same it is used today, is the best to see in the far distance!.

Best regards,
Dme.

My personal opinion is that IB's livery is really horrible (actually one of the bigs' worst), the opposite of classy and pretty "cheap", but I agree it is very recognisable from a far distance and I grant it is very nice seen from above...if one ever has the chance to see it this way...

What really doesn't fit there is the white writing "IBERIA" on the mid-fuselage: looks like a cheap floor tiles detergent's title. I'd like it a tad smaller, black and straight underneath the yellow stripe in the forward section. Plus: put the crown on the top of the "IB" on the fin, something bigger (double) and, again, black.

But more or less keep it as it is; a livery change is always a big issue for an airline -although not very important from a functional point of view-, 'cause it's the first aspect of a brand that bothers an "occasional customer" (better said: who doesn't pay a lot to fly, but belongs to the majority and needs to get attracted as potential loyal customer with "certainties").

Just my 2 cents,

regards,

V

When an airline starts changing liveries it normally means they have run out of business ideas.

The British always think of Spain as a holiday destination and Iberia has bright colours that remind us of happy holidays. Changing it now would likely be a complete disaster.
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I've flown Iberia for 20 years now. I don't mean to offend anyone, but I think the livery is a disgrace. Although I think the product is great and there is genuine effort to innovate and provide a world-class product, I think the exterior paintjob needs some 21st century ideas. The present livery is flat and soul-less.
By all means, IB should keep the colous, I agree with someone above who mentioned the colors recall happiness and sunny days..

I think it would be possible to keep the colors but update the look with the font and the color design on the plane. No one said it had to go Eurowhite, and it would be a mistake if it did. The current "swoosh" of colors just looks so much like an old soda can- its a style from the 70s and it looks it. Keep the colors and maybe expand them more on the fuselage, update the IBERIA font on the side and maybe make the IB on the tail a bit bigger or something (looks odd the way it is now). Honestly, for all the artistic tradition in Spain I should think they could tap into it and produce something really memorable and "Spanish".

Ha, ha!! I love this!

Ok, let's talk about corporative identities! You know how difficult it is to create and position a long term image?? Look at General Electric, Coca-Cola, Michelin (although a bit fatter!), BMW, Nestlé, Lego, etc. etc. etc... We are now in the age of continous innovation, but values must be kept. This, in the end, is down to management, those who believe they must create a revolution to honour there name on a copper-tin sign at the entrance of the building need to be kicked in the a--s. In my opinion, evolution does not mean revolution. And many of these super genious CEO's have destroyed long term positioned brands by wanting desperately to do something new.

With IB, like so many others, there are many things that have to be put up to date before there logo, because this is there strongest asset.

I LOVE IT AS IS!

Couldn't be more Spanish.. the "dated" part that some refer to, for me is the best part. Liveries like AM, AA, AZ, IB, AF, KL (on the top of my mine)...are all part of that traditional lines and for me those are the best.

Now a days any new airline (LCC or Regular) could have a great colourful livery, this way you can tell which are the "mature" guys..

I like AV's new livery very much -which should be part of the group I just mentioned above, being the second oldest airline in the world-, but I would rather have their "dated" one, as IB's...

NEW:
Big version: Width: 700 Height: 497 File size: 156kb

OLD:
Big version: Width: 800 Height: 515 File size: 65kb

Don't you agree?

There must be so many ways of retaining the IBERIA logo idea, but modernizing it somewhat. TKeep the colors, even increase them on the fuselage, but render the tail a bit more sophisticated with a 21st century flare (3D effect, layers, etc)

Subjective I know, but it's my opinion. Love the colour palette and the stripe. Actually, it's the tail I dislike the most, the tail-logo doesn't look significant enough for a country like Spain and its national carrier.
