Convair 880 And 990 Routes

Mon May 29, 2006 1:51 am

I need data on all CV880 and 990 routes: at least name of airline, type of CV jet, routing and year or decade of service. I appreciate if you can include airline IATA code and post some pictures in this thread. schedules much appreciated.

Example:

Civil Air Transport CV 880 TPE- MNL
Civil Air Transport CV 880 TPE-HKG-BKK
Civil Air Transport CV880 TPE-SEL
Civil Air Transport CV 880 TPE-OKA-OSA-TYO
Civil Air Transport CV 880 TPE-OKA-TYO
Civil Air Transport CV 880 TPE-Tainan (the only domestic jet service by CAT)
---all services in 1966

I desperately need data on Nordair CV990 and Air Ceylon CV 990

Thanks for all your help.

Our VIASA used to operate the CV880 CCS-NYC. Don't know about any other routes. Maybe someone can help.

I read, and see in old timetables, that JAL used CV0-880s all the way from TYO to LHR via "Silk Route" over India, Egypt as well as Southeast Asia and domestic Japan flights. These were in 1960s, beleive service was terminated around 1970-1971.

Spantax used them for many years on charters within Europe.

Do a search on them to find 120+ pics which will give some idea where they used to visit

Hi ZRH!!!

It's good to "see you on my path".....well dear friend, you're absolutely right!!!! I'm sure that SR had other flights than these...and you know? SR also flew regulary to LIS with their CV990 Coronado, I think in 1973 or 1974!!! I still have vivid images of going to LIS airport and see some friends boarding SR691, LIS/GVA/ZRH in a CV990! SR certainly used ( and abused ) of the Coronado in the seventies around Europe amd Middle East!
regards and take care!

Cathay Pacific CX had a fair number of CV880s in its time flying all over their network, it was their first jet, flew it several times in the 70s to MNL and TPE.

You may call it abuse  Wink The thing was actually, that the Coronado was an extremely fast and pilot friendly tool. Basically all my elderly colleagues who had the pleasure to fly it, just fall in love with it and would give about anything to fly it again.

On the passenger side, the downside was it's relatively short range, what resulted still in a relatively long journey on the long range flights. I remember a friend of me who was F/O on the Coronado late sixties/early seventies. As he told, they were overtaking about any plane going down Balkan on the Far East route. But as they had to do a fuel stop in Athens - what the others didn't, using DC-8 and 707's - once they arrived in Karachi with this fast bird, those they were overtaking over the Balkan were just about ready to leave.

Anyhow, do to this range related issues, but also the arrival of the DC-10 and the B747 in the long range fleet and the lack of anything bigger than the DC-9-32 on short haul, brought Swissair to the decision to use the CV990 on flights within Europe and the Middle East. The planes received also another seat arrangement, allowing more passengers in the cabin for those short range flights. This ended that everybody who loved the Coronado on long range for it's comfort and space wasn't very keen about anymore, as it was limited in space, carrying that many people.

So finally with the arrival of the DC-9-51 on the oil crisis mid seventies the CV990 had to leave the SR fleet, a fact most of who had the privilege to work on, regretted very much.

Cheers

Yeah, I saw it. couldn't miss it. But, respectfully, I beleive TW had more flights out of ORD than the one listed to NY. I'm an old man. Back in the day, I saw four or five lined up at the terminal. They weren't ALL going to New York.

In 1972 I flew from JFK to LIS on a Swissair CV990. This flight went on to Switzerland from Portugal, but SR had full traffic rights JFK-LIS.

In the late 60's I also remember flying ORD-BOS on board an AA CV880. At least that's what I recall, I was quite young. Can anyone confirm?

CX was a CV880 operator in the late 1960s-1970s. CX used this plane from HKG to to routes within Asia and Australia (i.e.Taipei, Tokyo, Sydney, Bangkok, Singapore). Rode in one while I was in kintergarden from Hong Kong (Kai Tak) to Taipei (3-2 seating, excellent food, excellent service).

One of Delta's night flights I used to work was 999 which flew ORD-IND-SDF-ATL-MIA
some other runs out of ORD in lates 60's early 70's were:
ORD-IAH
ORD-MSY
ORD=STL-IAH
ORD-MEM-IAH
ORD-MCO-PBI
ORD-TPA-MIA
ORD-SDF-ATL
two of the shorter hops were IAH-MSY and PHL-BAL, both of which continued on Delta ran their 880's a lot. My first flight on the airline was during the great Eastern Airline strike of 1962. As a teenager, I had to get to ORD to connect to NWA to travel to SEA to visit relatives. Since Eastern had the majority of flights SDF-Ord at the time, my mother and I flew an American CV 240 SDF-CVG which served a full dinner on a 20 minute flight with one F/A! Overnighting in CVG, I was scheduled to take a Delta DC 6 nightcoach to piuckup my Northwest 720B ORD GEG SEA. At 4 am what should pull in the gate but a CV 880! I could not believe my luck. Sitting at the leading edge of the all white wing, I watched with awe as the summer sun rose over Indiana. The all white jet soared down over the Loop of Chicago as the Lake shimmered behind us. The day was dawning, and I had arrived in style!

In 1965, late June, I flew a Varig 990 from Rio GIG to Miami, connecting to a Delta 880 to Chicago. REAL Aerovias had ordered 3 Convair 990's but by the time they got delivered in about 1963 Real had been absorbed by Varig and they operated for a few years in Varig livery. I do recall that the Convair was almost an hour faster compared to B707-320 on the Rio-Miami run.

Don't forget Denver Ports of Call, a small Stapleton-based charter that ran CV990's, 707s, and 727s.

You may add CV990 HAM/ZRH on SR, been on that myself, ZRH-DUS was also flown in the 70s

SR had the 990 in service to African destinations like MLW DKR ABJ as well, but that is from deep memory.

Spantax lew the 990s from PMI and in the winters from LPA and TFS to various destinations across Europe, German cities like DUS HAM MUC CGN etc.

Last, I have seen DL 880s in EWR in the 70 but cannot say which destinations.

You gotta remember the 880 did not have the range to go coast to coast NonStop.. With TW, they stopped at ORD, STL, MKC PHX and a few other spots in between. For example, TW 115 went BOS-ORD-MKC-PHX-LAX.

at least name of airline, type of CV jet, routing and year or decade of service.

VIASA (Venezolana Internacional de Aviación, Sociedad Anónima) had 3 Convair 880-22M (reg. YV-C-VIA, VIB & VIC) in all operating the following routes:

1961: (YV-C-VIA)
Caracas-New York
Caracas-Maracaibo-Miami
Caracas-Mexico

1962: (YV-C-VIA & VIB)
In additon to the above,
Caracas-Maracaibo-Panama-Mexico
Caracas-Santo Domingo
Caracas-Curacao

1963-1965 (ALL 3 PLANES)
In addition to all the above,
Caracas-Maracaibo-Montego Bay-New Orleans

KLM & VIASA had a very close relationship and in 1963, all KLM Caribbean jet services were operated with VIASA planes (YV-C-VIC was painted with VIASA colours port side, KLM colours starboard). Routes between 1963-65 were:

Curacao-Aruba-Miami
Curacao-Maracaibo
Curacao-Caracas
Aruba-Caracas
Curacao-Caracas-Port of Spain-Paramaribo
Aruba-Curacao-St. Maarten-New York

Fellow A.Netters in Peru have failed to mention that Aerolineas Peruanas, APSA, operated 4 Convair 990A between 1963 and 1971 when the airline closed down for good.

Routes flown were:

Lima-Guayaquil-Los Angeles
Lima-Los Angeles
Lima-Bogota-New York
Lima-New York
Lima-Miami
Lima-Guayaquil-Miami
Lima-Buenos Aires
Lima-Santiago de Chile
Lima-Rio de Janeiro
Lima-Panama-Mexico

Hope that information helps !!

For my 2 cents...My only flight on an 880 was MIA-PBI-TPA, which I took back in '69 just to get on an 880. Turns out the plane (N8809) went on to be the Lisa Marie. Not a big deal, but interesting. It was a great flight, particulary the PBI-TPA leg with the fast climb and manoving around the normal afternoon thunderstorms over central Florida.
Then in '71 went to Europe for the first time and and traveled to ZRH (via ORY on AF Caravelle) just to get on the 990 ZRH-MUC.(my dad worked for Pan AM).
However, SR changed this to a "NEW DC9". I was pissed to say the least.

Just returned from ZRH over the weekend, and every time I arrive at ZRH airport by car it still reminds me of that trip (ZRH terminal 1 is the same one that was there then.
