Southwest: Lots Of Ferry Flights Today?

Mon May 29, 2006 10:08 am

Noticed lots of 3xxx flight numbers in/out of LAS today. They appear to be planes flying empty.

SWA3027 LAS-IND
SWA3358 LAS-ONT
SWA3401 STL-LAS

I know there was at least one more too. Anyone know why so many ferries today?

Nope these are actual scheduled flights. WN has been moving into 3000 numbers for their flights.

Looking at WN's schedule for today you will see.

STL-LAS 3401 4:55pm 6:30pm N/S 03:35

LAS-IND 3027 10:25am 5:00pm N/S 03:35

LAS-ONT 3358 4:05pm 5:00pm N/S 00:55

I've spent a lot of time with the Southwest schedule and if I've read everything correctly, the 3000s are only used for additional flights around holidays or for the day or 2 in between shedules.

This being Memorial Day weekend, there will be additional flights added. The same is also happening the weekend before July 4, either because its a holiday or because they're changing schedules that weekend.

The 3000s will only be used this weekend, look for them to be gone within the next few days until the next schedule change.

Now, it still only shows 2 non-stop STL-LAS flights for today like there normally is, so why is the flight number different?? The normal flight number used elsewhere??

When TZ entered into their agreement with WN, TZ changed all their flight numbers, all with four numbers. This was because of their code share. What are the TZ flight numbers now? I have not flown TZ for about 18 months.

TZ flight numbers are in the 4000 series. This way the flight numbers are the same across TZ and WN. A WN flight number in the 4000 series is operated by TZ, and a TZ flight number less than 4000 is operated by WN.

Still waiting for HP and US to do the same.

Could it be a sunday only n/s flight?

I looked to July and saw a 3000 Flight number for STL

July 2nd (sunday only flight a one stop) 3168 9:15am 11:35am 1 04:20

Then again as the other guy said this is near July 4th....so quite possibly true.

3000 flight numbers are also used for new or changed service between schedules.

Not any more... That changed when the whole numbering scheme changed to incorporate the ATA codeshares...

Positioning ferries are now 8500-series

Anytime.. The other major change was that "stubs" were no longer 6000 plus the original flight number--they became sequentially-numbered in the 9000-series whenever they happened to occur.

Probably moving a good amount of cargo too. Just because there are no passengers on board doesn't mean they're not making money. Mail and bulk cargo still have to move regardless of what day it is.
