Transit Thur YYZ- Is It Always So Screwed Up?

Wed May 31, 2006 12:17 am

I recently travelled on a *A award ticket DCA-YYZ-FRA-BOM (DCA-YYZ-DCA on US, YYZ-FRA-YYZ on AC and FRA-BOM-FRA on LH) and back the same way. On way back, once we cleared Canadian customs, we dropped our bags as told to us to be transferred to the terminal where US flight departed. We had 4+ hours between flights. The bags did not show up for us to take them through US Immigration and Customs. US sent them home 24+ hours later.

More than 3+ hours to transfer bags between terminals is ridiculous IMO. Is the system at YYZ always that screwed up? We might have been better off carrying our own bags between terminals....

Toronto hasn't become a great transfer point. YYZ is my home airport and I fly out regularly, but always questioned their method to transfer between USA/International. Recently on a YYZ-CDG flight I saw a lot of US citizens with similar gripes and difficulties.

I could be mistaken, I think the bag drop is for those who are traveling in Canada and abroad, but not for USA. Considering you have to carry your bags through US Customs, I would keep mine and bring it through.

They do not make anything clear and it is a challenge figuring all of this out the first time. This is why I carry on any chance I get. Poor direction and overly confusing process for staff and pax alike.

Once the new Terminal 1 takes on the US and Domestic ops from Terminal 2 and the in-field terminal, transfers will be significantly better. I agree it can be horrible to transfer terminals, but there will be improvements in the next few years.
