Turkish Airlines Start Lagos (Nigeria)

Wed May 31, 2006 4:19 pm

Turkish Airlines will start flying twice weekly to Lagos on Thursday June 22, 2006. I think these flights will prove popular among the Turkish business community in Nigeria and Nigerian travelers connecting to Europe, Middle or Far East.

Flights will depart Istanbul Ataturk on Thursdays and Saturdays at 17:15 arriving Lagos Murtala Muhammad Int'l Airport at 21:55. Return flights will depart the same day at 23:55 (peak hours in Lagos) arriving Istanbul at 07:55 next day. The older Airbus A310-300 will be used.

The 07:55 arrival in IST will not give pax any good connections to Middle East/Far East or Central Asia. Most of these flights depart either during early evening hours or late at night. It is a good time for European connections though LOS-IST-ORY or LOS-IST-LHR would not make much sense right? Maybe to the Balkans/Russia/Ukraine etc or to domestic flights.

Most pax here dont mind a few more hours of flying in return of a cheaper ticket! It's not unheard of for Nigerians to fly to Dubai to connect to New York !!

Given the nature of operations to Nigeria and the fact that TK is almost certain to attract the non-premium market segment, the deployment of older equipment is really not a that bad of an idea.

As for connections, Nigerians are known to travel all over the world, and they don't mind long connecting times. Before Emirates started flying to LOS, Air France used to have several dedicated check in desks for LOS connecting passengers and all their luggage here in Jakarta. Nigerians used to travel via CDG between Jakarta and Lagos, which is quite a detour. Right now, the most popular connections are EK via DXB and, even more ludicrous, SAA via HKG and JNB!

The point is, if the fare is a bit cheaper than other fares on offer, the Nigerian community will use it, and as such I wouldn't be surprised to find plenty of LOS connections on TK's IST-BKK-SIN services.

People fly EK LHR-ACC/LOS via DXB. I think Soups did it as well. So, LOS-IST-ORY almost seems like a straight line from that POV.

Until EK arrived, almost all traffic from West Africa to other parts of the world used to be through Europe. MEA had hardly any connecting traffic, and MS's ABJ-LOS-KAN-CAI flight reached in the middle of the night.

This was not necessarily limited to West Africa. One of my dad's colleagues had to fly from NBO to KRT urgently -- his best option was flying from NBO to FCO then taking a connection back to KRT -- now, that's a detour!

Welcome to Africa!
yeah i flew LHR-DXB-LOS-ACC as it was the only airline that offered decent fares (£590 return) while the the next cheapest one was £1340 on LH Economy.
i seen some bags connecting LAX-LHR-DXB-ACC. Africans don't mind making a LONG detour as long as its cheaper. Mind you...... who wouldn't take a detour Wink
Next destinations, Suarabaya, beirut, paris, Accra

I wonder whether the North American Airlines service JFK-ACC gets much connecting traffic from other points in the US (such as LAX), or whether it is primarily New York originating/terminating.

Then they should be prepared for a 15 hour waiting time too  Smile

BTW, in summer IST-BKK goes twice daily (one with A 330), HKG goes non-stop and SIN continues to be served via BKK if I my memory doesn't serve me wrong.

Wow, that's good news. I would love to fly on their new A330. Does the second rotation stop in BKK or continue to somewhere else?

The 332 daily flights are as follows:

IST - BKK TK 60 dep 23:55 arr 13:00 next day
BKK - IST TK 61 dep 22:35 arr 05:00 next day

The TK 64 flights which is 5 times a week continues on to SIN but it seems that the 332 stays in BKK all day. But as of the 1st of August, SIN gets a direct flight 5 times a week on 343 as TK 66 and BKK continues to get 12 weekly flights as TK 60 and 64

JFK-ACC NA =$1400
LAX-ACC= $1200 (BA,KL,LH)
Now of they want to connect with NA it would cost a lot more.

HUH. When I look at Orbitz, it says that BA is $2400 round-trip to ACC from LAX, with a month advance purchase. NAA, on the other hand, looking at their web site, is as low as $688 one-way, or less than $1400 round-trip.

SIN flights are not 5 days at the moment but 4 and they are performed with A340
When SIN flights will become nonstop and it will be TK66 with A340

And at the same time all BKK flights will be TK60 which currently goes only on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and they are A330

And TK64 will drop completely.

So BKK flights will still be 1 daily A330.

This summer Turkish adds
1 NYC
1 SEL
2 HKG
4 SIN
2 BJS/PVG
3 KIX weekly and I am not sure if they have another aircraft or two for a additional daily long haul like BKK.

It sounds as though TK's plan is twofold: first, utilizing an aircraft that otherwise would have been sitting overnight, and second, going after O&D traffic at both locations. A 310, while not the newest, is a good medium-sized plane with long range capability with just the right capacity.

I think it's a very smart move.  bigthumbsup

I have to give it to TK, they are on the track (destination wise) to be a truely global airline. They are going from strength to strength and are flying everywhere  Smile

Good to see them committed to the African market.
