CX Order 2 More Boeing 773ER

Thu Jun 01, 2006 7:22 pm

The first firm orders of the year for the 773ER are from CX taking their total to 18 firm

Cathay Pacific Airways today placed orders for two additional advanced wide-body Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, increasing its commitment to a total of 18 since the airline announced its biggest ever order for new aircraft in December last year.

Previously, the airline made commitments for 16 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft with purchase rights for 20 more. Two of these purchase rights have now been exercised. The additional two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will be acquired through direct purchases from The Boeing Company.

All the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will be powered by General Electric GE90-115B engines. The additional two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft will be delivered in January and September 2008, while the first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft is scheduled to enter service in September 2007.

Will these B773ER eventually replace the A346 which CX have in their or do the intend to keep for some time? I mean 3 A346 seem pretty small for an airline like CX.

Sweet, might be just a small order, but still not bad.

Not sure if these two will replace them exactly, but I'd say the chances of the 3 A346s remaining in the fleet when their lease is up is low....

I'd say that will all depend on what the conditions for the extension of the lease will be. As I understand, Airbus has been offering such a good deal on these 3 airframes to CX that the airline had no other choice than to keep the aircraft in the fleet during the last lease extension. Now that CX is firmly going for the B77W, Airbus might not be interested in offering a continuation of the deal either.

I thought they were leased from ILFC and not Airbus?  confused

Are there reason why CX want replace their A346s. Poor performance or just the end of the lease??

People on A net don't like them?

Seriously though - the most likely reason is the maintenance, crew overhead of having such a small fleet of a particular model.

That was quick.....follow on orders are always a very good sign; especially so quickly after the original order, and consider that the first 773ER will not be delivered for more than a year. It does seem that CX will be very committed to the 773ER and expect follow on orders: it will likely become the backbone of the CX longhaul fleet.

This confirms how important the CX order was to the 773ER program.

As for the three leased A346s in the CX fleet, everything seems to suggest that these aircraft will leave the CX fleet at the conclusion of their leases (does anyone know the terms of these lease?).......the 773ERs will replace these aircraft. The 773ER has become the leader in this class.....but also consider that CX probably ended up with the worst performing early build A346s built and truly do not represent the type; that being said, the A346s seem to handle the JFK-HKG route without too many issues on a daily basis.

That is correct PM they are on lease from ILFC so Airbus is not really in a position be involved directly between ILFC and CX.

That's right, but still, CX is believed to enjoy such a great deal on those 3 airframes that it would have been almost criminal not to extend that lease agreement that last time around.

The other day someone on anet made the ridiculous statement that the 777 had no orders yet this year and it was going to be a dead airplane. So much for rediculous statements.

I seriously did not expect this airline to exercise options after only having placed this large order not that long ago. Good for them, I hope they grow well and strong.

The original lease terms were for 5 years and CX took delivery in 2002 and 2003 of them so when did they have the chance to extend the lease agreement? That said IIRC early last year or late 2004 they signed a 5 year deal with RR to maintain the engines on the birds so they'll most likely stay around for awhile yet. If not, demand for widebodies is strong and ILFC may well have no problem placing them with a carrier elsewhere.
