World Cup - National Team Charters

Thu Jun 01, 2006 8:51 pm

I was reading the news today and I came across a picture of the Argentinean team arriving in Germany for the upcoming world cup on a chartered flight from southern Italy.

The charter in question is “Air Solomili” or similar (something that I never heard before in my life). What AC is that? (link below)

http://www.servicios.clarin.com/nota...1575&mtmTipo=Imagen&mostrar=575398

I also learnt the players originally flew from Argentina to Italy in various scheduled flights. I am surprise with such well paid players they did not charter their own plane.

Does anybody knows how other national teams will be flying to Germany (or flew already)? I remember in France ’98 England came back on Concorde (If anybody can find the pic will be great

England will be flying on British Airways. They always do as it's good PR for both the team and the airline. Usually a B767 or T7. Didn't know they flew concorde in 98 though!

National Team of Togo arrived 2 weeks ago on Eurowings Avro Jet.
The "Socceroos" from Auatralia will arrive on Tuesday, June 6th with Qantas at Stuttgart Airport (STR). John Travolta is supposed to fly the plane himself.
And there are rumors that "Wunala Dreaming" will be that aircraft.

The Brazilian team had a two week training camp here in Switzerland. The RG flight GRU-GIG-MUC made an extra stop in ZRH to bring a part of the team (there is a thread about the RG MD 11 in ZRH). Other players came directly from MAD or even by car from Milan. After their testing match in Geneva they will go to Germany. I think by a Swiss or German airline, don't know which one.

ATR, guess the 42-500. But it is difficult to say, could also be a 72.

Still wondering which carrier the US team will use, seeing as they will arrive at HAM tomorrow morning, and I wouldn't want to miss the plane.

Ok. Good luck Italia or Germany for the final victory. Both my favourite teams.

In 1982 when Italy won the world cup in Spain they flew back with the presidential plane, right?

With all the security buzz around the team, people would notice them soon once the are stuck in a plane on the runway/car on the street waiting for the US team to pass by with enough of a safety zone  Wink .

I believe "The Socceroos" have already departed for europe this week ahead of the World Cup. The Socceroos have 2 friendly matches prior to the World cup in 2 weeks....I also believe the aircraft operating the special charter for the 'Socceroos' is B767-336ER 'Victor Hotel - Zooloo X-Ray Bravo'

Fair enough, we haven't won too many trophies as a national team. Oh but hang on, I seem to remember we've won a damn site more than Slovenia! And I certainly don't see Slovenia in the group stages.... Oh, wait a minute... you haven't qualified have you? AGAIN!

Air Dolomiti has a mixed fleet of ATR-42, ATR-72 and Bae146-300, so the AC could have been one of these.

The italian presidential plane is the A-319CJ, Italian government has 2 of them

The US National Team arrived in Hamburg on Friday, June 2nd aboard a charter flight from Newark. It appears that the EWR - DUS flight on Thursday, June 1st was cancelled and the Privatair Airbus 319LR was used to fly the team from EWR - HAM. The flight left Newark as LH489 at 16:32 on June 1st and arrived in Hamburg at 6:02 on June 2nd. The plane was then flown from HAM - DUS to make its regularly scheduled DUS - EWR flight at 10:00.

England Team in 98:

I was there in the BA Maintenance Area TBE area when they landed on Concorde and disembarked through steps. Sadly I have no pictures.

Some BA Engineers were booing Beckham as he stepped off.
Presumably the same England fans who I've seen and heard singing "Stand up if you hate Man U".

I will echo my colleges in saying that the United States is a much better team than they used to be. We weren't ranked 13th after the last world cup for nothing.

That being said....I wonder if BWIA will fly the Trinidad team (I'd like them to win at least a game, possibly 2). Don't know if they have the planes, but it sure would be nice to see 9Y-TJN make the trip.

Mexico flew to Europe on Aeromexico, which is a major sponsor of the team. AM is airing a great ad on TV showing people of every walk of life telling each other that they had dream where the Mexican team wins the cup. We had better enjoy it now because I guess we won't see it anymore in a rather short time  Smile I hope I'm wrong, though.

From the Netherlands to Germany, they flew Lufthansa.

Did miss the opportunity to catch the flight, though with an arrival at 6:02 am, it was hard to catch anyway (at least for me). And with all the security measures around the team...
