Since terminal 3 is where all the international flights need to arrive at due to FIS location, how much more can DL expand their international ops at JFK before they run out of gate space?
Terminal 3 has about 11 gates currently that can be used for wide-bodied international arrivals (with direct access to FIS facilities) - Gates 3-10, 12, 14, and 15. They currently have about 3 arrival banks which allow them to split the use of those gates:
1. 1pm - 2pm: 7 flights
2. 2pm - 3pm: 3 flights
3. 3pm - 4:30pm: 8 flights
Basically what happens now is the a/c from the 1st bank are towed to various tarmac parking areas and to Terminal 2 gates to make room for the later arrivals. Based on this, I think they can still squeeze in a few more flights.
They haven't done it in ages but I remember arriving from Europe on a delayed DL
flight once and we had to park at a Terminal 2 gate (it was the evening hour and all the T3
gates were occupied); we were then taken off the a/c via a PeopleMover (like the ones at IAD
) and transported to the T3
FIS areas...I suppose they can do that if they really need to....I actually remember Pan Am doing that back in the day as well; there were 747s parked on the tarmac and passengers were transported by PeopleMovers from the Gate 11 area (back then it was Gate 9 at the Pan Am Worldport) to board their planes.
