JetBlue Adds 7 New Gates At JFK

Thu Jun 01, 2006 11:40 pm

I searched the forum, but did not see this anywhere. How did they manage to get so many extra gates -- I was under the impression that Terminal 6 was operating at full capactiy with no room for expansion. Shows how much I know.

Also, does this mean that these gates are for E190 only?

he additional seven-gate facility offers customers comfortable waiting areas with free Wi-Fi, power outlets for laptops and cell phones, seating capacity for 100 at each gate and aircraft access via enclosed jetbridge.

These gates are temporary gates. The facility has been placed in front of the new terminal under construction. When the new terminal is complete, these gates will be dismantled I believe.

We built portable gates just infront of the T5 construction area. I've seen the inside of the new space and it is extremely nice inside. It is almost better than T6 is! The pictures are on our intranet so i'll see if I can get them posted here.

Is this part of the existing structure of Terminal 5 or did they build these from ground up? Also, is it all brick and mortar or some other material given the temporary nature? Finally, is it one floor or two? Sorry for the endless stream of questions.

They are in no way connected to the new facility, they are modular facilities like we use a LGB.

Saw the new structure on Sunday. It's (from my quick observation) a totally stand-alone building, but certainly temporary looking in nature. Understandably since it is temporary. It looks like a very long motor-home with a bunch of jetways sticking out. It's one-floor and the jetways seemed very low.

The jetways are relly low. They go up from the building to the 320 hieght. I was wondering when they were gonna open. The building was finished for a while. Alliedhas been parking there trucks there. (Like they do with any open space)

It is my understanding that this facility will "look" and "feel" temporary because, well, it is.

However, it will be a part of JetBlue's future until the new T5 is completed several years from now. As such, this temporary building has a lot of the features of the main terminal, including flushing lavatories, service desks, plenty of seating and concessions. I was also told that B6 expects much of its E190 flights from JFK to use this facility although the gates can take A320s too.

Just got back from a field trip over to the new temp. terminal...VERY NICE.  bigthumbsup

Very roomy, plenty of seating, even a small version of the NYSG there. Jetways going from the terminal to the a/c...which was a surprise. I even asked a few customers their feeling about having to take the shuttle over and they all had positive things to say about the experience which was a nice surprise! Very happy!  Big grin

Congrats to B6!

This will help.

Quetion: How is B6 doing for slots at JFK during the restricted hours? Or will these gates sit empty in the afternoon (for cleaning) and be redeye/morning overflow gates?

I cannot wait for the photos! Some one take a shot of the E190's lined up at the gates.

I saw it while passing by a month ago when they were working in it. It looks temporary from the outside but that is what it is.

Can't wait until the pictures!

By looking at the flight tracker it seems today the only flights leaving from there is 3X AUS, 2X BDA, 3X RIC, 1X BTV. So, so far it is just 190 flights out of 18-21, with 4 flights per day out of Gate 18, 3 out of 19, 1 out of 20 and 1 out of 21. So it looks like they're starting to use it but certainly not all of it. They have yet to switch their JFK-SJU flights back from TER4, but they can do that easily now with all of the new space.

I can imagine the gates to be fully used at the end of July. (Probably even before then.) By then CLT, RDU, JAX, and PIT service will be introduced.

A few questions:
When will SJU flights be back in T6?
What kind of Shuttles are they, and how does one access it from T6?
Some have mentioned it, but are they definitely trying to limit it to the 190s for now?

I believe they are back at Terminal 6 now? Back in March I flew Jet Blue to SJU from Terminal 4. I love Terminal 4 so I was pretty happy about it. It was pretty cool to use the baggage claim used in Garden State!

As a side note jetBlue will be operating out of gate D6 in CLT when they start service next month.

I must have missed something here. When did B6 switch terminals for JFK-SJU departures? Was there a separate check-in area in Terminal 4 for these flights. Is JFK-STI also departing and arriving at Terminal 4, or only arrivals for customs & immigration clearance?

As for the long portable facility, it looks like its lacking in windows from the rear. Is this the same for the front of the facility?

I've been working a trip and haven't had time to grab the pictures off the intranet. Right now I am in DTW waiting for my flight back to GRR and I should be able to get them uploaded by the end of the day.

As far as I remember hearing, we are actually going to get more gates in T4 until T5 is complete. The T6 "prime" gates will be for E190 flights only, with the exception of IROP situations. I haven't heard anything about SJU flights moving back to T6. In fact, I'm working a SJU trip out of T4 today.

They switched over to Terminal 4 on February 17th. There was some mention on jet Blue's website that they would switch back to Terminal 6 sometime in May but I guess that hasn't happened yet.

The check-in area I used:

Jet Blue used gate B25 on departure and arrival back into JFK. When we arrived at JFK we left concourse B via the departure hall.

The prime gates are the gate numbers that are only divisble by 1 and itself
(1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 17, 19, 23)  Big grin

But seriously the "prime" gates in T6 are referring to the new temporary gates, because they are in the prime location of still being in T6.

IROP= Irregular Operations (example a delayed flight that can't find a gate in T6 proper)

Out of curiousity, wouldn't the gates in T6 proper be "prime" since there is no Shuttle bus ride involved?

Of all of B6's gates yes the prime gates would be T6 proper however I believe that SKYYBLUE was only referring to the temporary gates that B6 will use until T5 is opened. So among those gates T6-SAT is the prime location.

T4. While the gates themselves aren't temporary, B6's use of them (as departure gates) will be.

For passengers that are transiting in JFK to SJU, are there plans to add a shuttle bus to Terminal 4 on airside? It seems if more gates are added there, I take it that would have to be the logical solution.

Everything involving SJU arrive and depart from 4 and then will taxi over. The reason i heard why they switched the SJU flights over was because most people from SJU don't connect through JFK, they are arriving in NY and staying so no need to worry that much about connecting pax because they few that do connect can use the Airtrain. Plus T4 and T6 are one stop away from each other so it isn't a bad connection.

Sounds like a pain in the neck to me. I guess that anybody in BOS or ROC that must take JetBlue to SJU isn't liking the current situation much. Man, this will be a lot better when they get their new (dedicated) terminal although I guess it will not have customs or immigration in-house, from what I have heard.

It won't but it is built so it can be added on easily to the building. It really isn't bad because not many people at all connect to SJU and that is why they did the move.
