Darwin Airline Takes Off To OLB And CAG!

Fri Jun 02, 2006 4:11 pm

The swiss regional airline launch today its 2 scheduled summer destinations: Olbia Costa Smeralda and Cagliari. The flight to OLB is operated in codeshare with AirOne. Those two beautiful destinations are served from Darwin Airlines' "mini hub" and homebase LUG.

OD 015 CAGLIARI time 14:10
OD 100 / AP 1100 OLBIA time 14:15

Bookings are doing well! Darwin currently has 4 Saab 2000 and is doing really great, also thanks to many charter agreements. Its in flight product is one of the greatest in Europe and cheap prices can be found if booked early! It seeks to attract pax from the Ticino market, but aims also to offer a different choice for the Italians instead of flying from the busy MXP or LIN.

You can learn more about it visiting www.darwinairline.com

From GVA to OLB 1---5-7 via LUG
From GVA to CAG ----5-7 via LUG
From BRN to OLB --3----
From BRN to CAG ----5--
From LCY to OLB --3---- via BRN
From LCY to CAG ----5-- via BRN

Will they expand more in the near future? Possibly adding a further Saab 2000 and opening up new routes? I could imagine a BRN - THF service or LUG - BRN - CDG (as Crossair once did) might work quite well?

As far as I know they were interested in a fifth Saab2000 but Swiss wanted to sell them to Polet from Russia.
There are four Polet Saabs in BSL right now and they will leave in a short time  Sad However, Polet decided not to take the other two Saabs so if Darwin is fast enough they can get them.

Swiss/Lufthansa recently told that they would like to restart operations in BSL in 2007. It would be nice to see Darwin operate these flights. In my opinion this would be the chance for Darwin to get a few very good routes such as AMS, BRU, maybe even LCY and more...

I for myself cannot wait until to fly them- and my loved Saab!  Wink

That would be nice indeed! However I doubt it. To operate out of BSL for business you would need a few A/Cs. Darwin has 1 on the ZRH, 1 on the BRN-LCY, 1 on the FCO (not all the day long), 1 on the GVA (some free time). All 4 Saab 2000 are busy, at least in the morning and evening.

Business routes out of BSL would require, in my opinion, an additional fleet of almost 4 A/Cs, which are not too easy to find (if we consider they won't have a mixed fleet). I can however see Darwin restart some routes out of BRN with 2 aircraft and connection from LUG.

THF will be soon closed. CDG would be possible only with an AF codeshare, like AMS with KL and Vienna with OS. Do you know if someone is already in talks with BRN airport to restart some operations?

I heard about KLM to be interested in BRN, but it seems they are looking for a carrier taking a part of the risk. I think this would be a good chance for Darwin indeed.

And I think they should buy those two Saab2000 from Swiss as long as they are still available.

I would say BRN to BRU would be an interesting route as well, mainly because of all the government staff travelling between the two cities.

BRN-AMS with direct flight and codeshare 35-40 pax a day (historical figures)
BRN-BRU government predicts only 10 pax every weekday

Of course, it would be about 6-7 mio. Swiss francs investment, so not too much. However the problem is that Darwin has already the capacity for launching new business routes in October 2006 (charter flights + OLB + CAG are only operating in the summer season). Another 2 Saab will require a big and high risk expansion for them. The right moment to add those aircraft would be summer 2007 when launching new summer destination.

Is this a seasonal service?

The only problem is getting from a international gateway to LUG....or BRN...without adding another connection into it.
But I've heard great things about Darwin....and I want to ride the Saab 2000, so it might be worth it.....
DEN-EWR-ZRH-train-BRN/LUG-CAG?

Or what does LH have via Frankfurt?

I am looking at October to visit.

Interesting figures. I wonder why the figures to BRU are so low?! Is there not more demand or are government people using other flights from ZRH/BSL?

Darwin Airline has some codeshare linking MAN, IOM, LPL, CGN... to its network, you may check them under "partnership" online. However they also are in Amadeus and the best route to fly them is the GVA-LUG one!

I think the O&D traffic concerning BRN-BRU is reaching BSL or ZRH airports. RJ100, if you have never seen this link, than open it and enjoy it! I find it really interesting and the source is the best one you have BAZL & BFS. I believe you will enjoy it!!! Big grin

If you remember timetable & aircraft type... voilà, load factors are easily calculated!

Is there a chance for a LUG-MUC flight ?

Yes, I know, I'm probably dreaming...
Exceptions confirm the rule.

There has been a MUC-LUG flight some years ago by LH. They cancelled it again after a quite short time.

That's what they are telling us for years now about THF. And its still operational. Resistance to close it is quite strong. However, if it is indeed to close, operations could be shifted to the new BBI Airport or TXL (will TXL close as well when BBI opens?). I think there is quite some demand from BRN to the greater Berlin area.

Of course, AMS and CDG would only make sense with KL and AF codeshare. That's the way it was done before by Crossair and Swisswings.

To my knowledge, OS is or was interested to start a morning flight to VIE. The plane would return to BRN in the evening for a night stop. However I don't know how far this project got. Anyone got some information on this?

Dont SWISS still fly BSL-LCY?

I believe European Air Express tried it (and BRN-DUS) a couple of years ago and it failed

Lead by SN Brussels I believe. Didnt they even go to court to stop it closing?

Yes. And no one seems to be objecting to Tegel's closure

I know this route has been served on and off by various carriers over recent years. Haven't Intersky and Cirrus operated the route in the past few years?

They still do, 3x daily (reduced services on weekends).

My idea was to give away the route to Darwin because they have the more ideal aircraft for this route.
