You put 6/2/06 but that is today and today is a perfect day outside. I think you mean last night's bad storms on 6/1.

yes there were also bad storms last night. Here in MD we had very bad storms, especially around the baltimore area.

Today also will be stormy. There will most likely be more delays/diversions all along the east coast as the day progresses. Check the weather channel and see for yourself  Smile

Nope. If you look at the radar, there are some random big storms around, continuing into tonight:

From the 44th floor of the World Financial Center, I can tell you that as of 4pm today, there are some amazing cells coming in from Jersey and hitting midtown Manhattan...BLACK clouds, walls of water that are obscuring the view of midtown... really cool views!

When I left the hangar last night at 7:30pm the sky to the west was BLACK and the a/c were lined up (departure RWY last night was 22R) from RWY22R, all the way down RWY31R, around to the other side and back. There must have been between 40 and 50 a/c waiting to go...and while I was driving I noticed that a/c were being vectored in on both 22L and 22R which just hurts trying to get the planes out on 22R. Welcome to summer at JFK!!!!

I can see your building. I'm on the 10th floor of an office building in Tribeca, but I have a clear view to the south.

It's pouring outside right now and I expect a lot of flights to be diverted for the rest of tonight.

I'm listening to the live KPHL Tower on liveatc.net....some pretty heated conversations at times, you can tell they're having a cluster-f of a day! Just heard an interesting WN go-around/diversion to BWI.

Now I think my wife is scowling at me for listening to this so LOUD.....

Yea I'm corrected now. Where I live which si 4 mi from JFK it was nice and perfect until like 15 minutes after my post. It doesn't look bad outside yet just some light gray but I am sure it will come.

More later....

Just heard over the BWI traffic that PHL is in a ground stop. Can anyone confirm this?

At one point, I could tell exactly where the rain had started in Tribeca northwards due to the reflection of headlights on the wet West Side Highway (where the street was dry, no reflection).

P.S.... I'm in #3 WFC... pyramid top (tallest of the bunch).

Just looking at flightaware New York airspace map, and see LH402 heading into EWR from PHL after being diverted from FRA.

Yeah, I was on the 16th floor in midtown yesterday and it was amazing. Your description hits the nail on the head: black clouds, could barely see out once it started raining...Very cool storm!

On Thursday night, when I got home in Brooklyn the storm must have been right above us because I've never seen lightning like that in 19 years of living here...

This was Thursday night right? Yeah, it was an absolute mess....At 8:30 though (when I was getting home) there was a HUGE cell that passed right over my neighborhood and must have hit JFK as well. I checked Passur when I got home and there were no movements from JFK at all....In a situation like this, do aircraft return to the gate or can they just shut down and wait on line for the storm to pass? It must have been a good two hour wait for that line you described--I'm sure some of them had to cancel because of crew hour issues as well.

Btw, just to clarify, the aircraft waiting to take off on 22R were lined up all the way down north of 13L, around it, and then DOWN towards 22R again???!!!! Wow!

I thought that thhe NYC airports had stopped doing this? Didn't they instigate a system where the planes call for start and are then held on the gate until its time to taxi out and take off, like most European airports do. I know fuel is cheap in the States, but think off all that kerosene being burnt waiting in line.

Nope, they do not do this at JFK...If they did, there would be many inbound aircraft waiting for gates (and burning fuel while doing so).

I snapped this off of flightaware yesterday... it gives you an idea of the storms and traffic (note all the aircraft holding bound for LGA I believe)
