The Official National Airlines Rememberance Thread

Mon Jun 05, 2006 11:41 am

Well, there it is.

I dont remember anything about National Airlines except for one thing...

didnt thave have a special, out of NY, to Las Vegas, for $99 one way and $1 the other way?? Anyone recall that? Must have been in Winter/spring of 2002.

Otherwise, what do you recall of them? Did anyone ever fly them or work for them?

I believe the original post is referring to National2, not the original with the SunKing logo.

Thanks, I wasn't sure. I flew national-2 round trip PHL-LAS VEGAS. Back around 2002 with 757-200's both ways. At the time the advertised extra leg room in coach. They compared themselves to the new AA coach product of the time. Food was good. Old drop down screens for movies to Vegas. Red eye home no screens, drop down or otherwise. Day trip to Vegas was 3/4 full. Red eye home was full. John

National Airlines flew not for very long. I remember spotting National Airlines planes in Las Vegas -- all 757s. I was impressed. What was National's slogan?

The author of the thread is refering to National2, the LAS based 757 one.

I did have two flights on them nonrev on a free pass as an employee of a competiotor. I flew LAX-LAS-JFK making a connection at LAS, it was about 5 or 6 years ago, here are my memories.

They used a DL gate at LAX, minumal National signage, they allowed non-revs to upgrade to First if avilable and it was on this leg for I think $15. Nice Big Leather seat and a length of flight approaite small snack. Had about a one hour conx in LAS's modern and almost new D gates. a nice competive advantage for them. LAS-JFK flight was almost full, nothing left in First and got a middle seat between two nice young ladies one of which I saw a few times as a result of meeting on the flight. Nice hot meal and pretty full service in coach and there was a movie shown on the overhead monitors. Both flights where on time or close and every employee I encounter was reasonalby friendly and proffessional. I was surprised that some of their own employees where able to and wearing tank tops, shorts and sneakers while non-reving. For those of you who are or have been airline employees I am sure you can relate to my surprise at the lack of dress code while non-reving. All in all good memories, I would say they got an A from me.

Regards

I didnt realize there were 2 National airlines.

AS guessed, I was in fact referring to the newer one, all I recall is their insanely low Vegas fares from NY, for $100 round trip.

Wow! I am in shock over this statement! I always thought that National 1 was much more famous than National 2. This is one of the basic bits of knowlege that every airline geek knows! I thought that everyone knew about the old National Airlines. It was a lot of peoples favourites.

I use to work for N7 as a agent in SEA and then as a Supervisor in RNO. They were a great little airline with awsome in flight meals esp. in First Class.
What killed them was a lack of leadership from the top. They tried to play to meany accounting games and in the end the creditors just got tired of it.

LONG LIVE N7.NATIONAL AIRLINES!!!!

The 2nd National Airlines was started by Mike Conway, who left HP in the early 90's. I know quite a few coworkers who left HP to help start N7, and they absolutely loved it. And yes it ended up being poorly managed  Sad . But while they were around it was a nice back-up to non-rev on. I also have fond memories of the original National Airlines, with their "Fly me" campaign, and "SunKing" service.

A lot of people may not remember the original National by name, but they certainly DO remember the "Fly Me" Campaign!
