The Future Of Spirit Airlines

Mon Jun 05, 2006 12:21 pm

What does everyone think the future of Spirit Airlines will be?

I read some great information about Spririt on http://emergingairlines.blogspot.com/ .

Does anyone agree with these observations???

I've heard that they aren't doing too well - and that is why they often have $5-10 fare sales. I don't know how true it is.

Err... I've heard from a two members on these boards (and they fly Spirit quite often) that Spirit is nothing special. They have rude F/As, mediocre service, and that they only fly them because they are super cheap. I have no idea how well they are doing, honestly. I do not pay that much attention to them, but I wish them good luck.

Well, I agree - I never like to see an airline fail, but when you see an airline always having rock bottom prices like Spirit (especially with fuel prices the way they are), you have to think that they aren't doing very well.

I have heard mixed things about NK some say they are doing okay and that obviously the entire plane does not go out full of these $9 dollar fares, however I have heard others say that they are doing terrible and it's only a matter of time before the company goes public.

Spirit does have huge problems at FLL and most of it is because they contract their ramp out. Baggage issues are constant with passengers waiting as long as 30 minutes for bags, which causes bigger problems since they frequently have tight connections caused by delays in FLL customs (not really NK's fault)

However they have forced US out of the international market at FLL and there are rumors of them hiring their own ramp, both will help fix some major issues. But with rumors of DL having international flights from FLL and NK adding more flights they could start facing the same delays in terminal 4 customs that they had with US.

As far as in-flight goes my opinion would be a little dated since I flew on an MD-80 and it was a few years ago but a friend of mine flies them into DTW all the time and says the airbuses are very nice.

Gotta love cheap advertising. The way I look at it.... $9.00 fares get the word of mouth out real quick. NK does not even fly into SEA, but I heard about it. Kinda makes you wonder if they are really doing it for publicity and free advertising? Not even Independence dropped down to $9.00.

No matter what their gig is. They are staying out of the bk spotlight. An airline that keeps to themselves is the way I see NK. The quiet ones are the ones that can pack a punch.

Nobody has been more surprised that Spirit has survived this long than I.n I figured NWA would pull out all the stops to hammer them into the ground like they did ATA..and tried to do with Midwest.

How a tiny, privately held airline could grow and prosper is beyond me.

But they keep flying. And regardless of how they're paying for them, they are acquiring a new fleet.

I guess we have to wait and see.

I will say this though...in 2004, I rode on one of their MD80 flights RSW-ORD. Talk about a rickety, rattletrap of an aircraft. I was on edge the entire flight, worried the whole damn thing might fly to pieces at 35k.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

$9.00 fares sounds like costly advertising to me. You know what happens to a website when every backpacker in America is looking to get in on one of those fares?

I mean it costs a hell of alot less to advertise this way, than it is to buy air time on television stations, making commercials, and so on.

Just my thought as to the $9.00 fares perhaps. It also puts cheeks in the seats, and gets NK's name out in the communities. Do you think those that got the $9.00 fares did not go crazy by calling everyone they knew? If that is NK's idea of advertising, I think it is a great idea.

I am sure the $9.00 fares were capacity controlled.

I personally love Spirit...
I fly them frequently from LGA to DTW
and Yeah I have complaints from time to time but generally I enjoy their flights..
I agree the MD-80's are quite shaky but they're still flying.
I do think also that the FA's are quite abrupt at times but everyones a culprit of that sometimes, I even had this issue on a SQ flight once...
and No-one would ever believe a Singapore Girl could be like that !!!

I don't know why you quoted ME as saying they have rude FA's. I never said such a thing.

I've flown them and found their FA's to be average - nothing exceptional, but definitely not rude, and not bad.

I've flown them several time. Decent service. I mean, no more than the mediocre experiences I 've had with AA lately. I do like their Spirit plus class, tough. Actually very good. You get priority check in at the airport, free drinks and 2x2 leather seating. The one way fare on one of my SJU flights last year was 99.00 and for 145.00 I went for Spirit +. Well worth it on the 2.5 hour flight with screaming kids in the back. And just a little more than AA's 125.00 one way in Coach on an old A300 or 757. Also, flew FLL-ORD last month. Flight was full going and about 90% coming. Lots of Spanish spoken by pax which meant lots of connecting pax from the blue waters area!

One thing I have noticed in regards to FLL(at least in my airport's point of view) is that they are almost trying to get more people to go to destinations in the Carribbean instead of local traffic to FLL because they can get more of a yield per passenger than the local traffic gives. I think they are playing the game very smartly. They are not trying to go head to head with airlines that could clearly destroy them in short time. I also think they are going to get more profitable as the last MD80s are retired. They cannot wait for the all Airbus fleet as far as fuel costs are concerned.

NK used to have service from MLB to LGA and DCA....but when 9/11 happened they(NK-1 WK)and CO(never flew in after 9/10) dropped MLB faster than you can drop your drawers and @!%*

They can both blow it out their ears as far as I'm concerned...

At least DL still flies into MLB...for the time being.

I work for NK, and I don't know the whole story.. the fact is, being a privately held company, nobody knows but the folks in Mirimar.

however, we are still getting the Airbii as planned, and dumping the 80's as planned. I'm not going to be fooled into thinking we are the best airline in terms of financials, but I do believe we are not the worst.

As far as the f/a's, you fly an airline enough, you get both good service and bad at some point... hopefully the good happens more often though.

IMHO - I remember when they use to be known as Charter One! They have come a real long way since then.

I used to work for Spirit from 1997-2000. Back then while I enjoyed the experience, it was a very disorganized place at best. The A/C we flew were very old DC-9's and MD-80's, (1 DC-9 dated back to something like 1967). Also I worked some flights that were delayed hours due to maintenence, (a side effect of an ancient fleet. In 1999 Dr. Jacob Shorr took over the company from Ned Holmfield, (founder). This saved us from possibly going out right then. I left for SWA because I felt our days were numbered!
However, since then they have gotten investors to help them acquire new Airbii and they have concentrated their efforts on International routes from FLL. This was all part of the plan which is why they relocated their headquarters from Eastpoint, MI to Miramar, FL in early 1999. Hopefully all will work out for them. Needless to say based on the company I left, I am proud of what they have accomplished in the past 5 years!
