4 747-400s For BG?

Mon Jun 05, 2006 6:19 pm

The last story in the Bangladesh Biman saga.

Yesterday i was told by a BG staff , here at Orly , they have shelved plan to acquire 777s , and now are searching for 4 second hand 744s to replace DC10s.
Despite the 744 is too big for them it will be far less cheaper to get than the T7s , even second hand.

Their plan if they really go ahead with these 744s , is to reduce frequencies , particulary to LHR and introduce these 744s.

In another way they do not speak anymore of the A330s.

Let see if this plan will work.

While you still have time to edit... I think you meant that the second hand B744s will be far cheaper than the T7, right? "far less cheaper" would meant that the B744s would be more expensive.

I'm not really surprised they've given up on B777s and A330s, not really too many of those around to get second hand... but B744s? Wouldn't it make more sense to try to get more A310s or perhaps some B767s?

I think SQ will be the airline to sell them the 747-400s.They are releasing 6 of their older 747s in the coming months when the A380s and 777-300ERS arrive.BG`s DC-10s and A310s were all ex SQ aircrafts.

This afternoon , i was told they are in discussion with Corsair , for them to source these 744s.
The planes will not be ex Corsair machines.
As the Corsair machines are ex UA , can we think those destined for BG , can come from UA too ? How many 744s UA still have to sale ?

Getting them cheap is one thing, operation cost would be another thing.

Airline Airport staff are not always the best source.

Nothing surprises me with BG anymore. I think it is a cool airline and it was fun to me flying on BG. But their management has still to go a long way till they reach the end of the tunnel.

I doubt if this airline could afford a bunch of second hand DC-9s right now.

I have always love seeing the Bangladesh DC10s on my many visits to LHR, and will be sad to see them go as they are lovely aircraft. I personally think as a DC10 replacement in BG present financial state, they would be better of acquiring 5 or 6 used long range twins ie B767-300 which are cheaper to operate and maintain than the trijets. The DC10s are lovely planes, but they are costing a lot to maintain now than in the past due to the fact they will require more checks as they have been flying for over 25 years in the case of the 3 ex SQ and 1 ex CP planes, and so draining BG limited financial resources further.
