National '76 And Hughes Airwest '78 Timetables

Tue Jun 06, 2006 11:30 am

I appreciate those ANet members who answer my questions when they get some old timetables so I am returning the favor.

I found, buried in a drawer, a National Airlines timetable dated November 15, 1976 and a Hughes Airwest timetable dated September 6, 1978.

If anyone has any city-specific requests I'll do my best to answer them.

I enjoyed very much the sight of the flying bananas down here at GDL back in the 70's. Any info regarding GDL would be much appreciated.

I recall going on a one day school trip in the 6th grade in June, 1976 from
JFK-DCA. It was a morning flight on a National 727 with a morining snack. The return,DCA-JFK left late in the afternoon, also on a 727. Do you have an approximate schedule. I know your schedule is from Nov-1976, but back then they probably did not change schedules so often as they do now. Thanks.

The timetable for Hughes Air West would have been right before deregulation - what flights did they offer to/from BFL and SAN? I believe that would have right before pulling out of BFL lock, stock, and barrel.

AirWest from Bay Area airports to L.A. basin airports.

SFO-LAX: 3 nonstops, 2 1-stops (via Monterrey). That's it. No other nonstop or direct service from the Bay to the Basin.

Quoting AirAmericaC46 (Reply 2):

Kindly tell me all the schedules/routings of National 747.

No 747's in the National fleet at this time. 727 and DC-10.

Quoting Orbis (Reply 3):

Any info regarding GDL would be much appreciated.

There was 1 daily service on Hughes Airwest out of GDL. A fun flight though...what aviation enthusiast wouldn't have loved to take this direct routing: GDL-PVR-PHX-SJC-SFO-SMF-EUG-PDX-SEA. Flight #4 departed GDL at 3:35pm and arrived in SEA at 1:08pm.

Quoting 7E72004 (Reply 4):

Any IND or SEA flights?

No IND flights. Hughes had a healthy SEA operation though. I'll list the nonstops but bare in mind as a local service carrier, those flights hopscotched all over the Western US, so many other cities had direct service from SEA.

Boise x 2 daily
Pasco x 1
Portland x 4
Reno x 2
Salt Lake City x 2
Spokane x 7
Yakima x 5

Quoting Sspontak (Reply 5):

Do you have an approximate schedule.

National had the following schedules DCA-JFK:

dep DCA 10:10am arr JFK 11:05am
dep DCA 12:05pm arr JFK 1:00pm
dep DCA 5:10pm arr JFK 6:05pm
dep DCA 7:05pm arr JFK 7:58pm
dep DCA 7:35pm arr JFK 9:21pm (via PHL)
dep DCA 9:15pm arr JFK 10:10pm
dep DCA 9:20pm arr JFK 11:04pm (via BWI)

and the following schedules JFK-DCA:

dep JFK 7:10am arr DCA 8:57am (via BWI)
dep JFK 7:55am arr DCA 8:53am
dep JFK 9:20am arr DCA 10:18am
dep JFK 12:10pm arr DCA 1:08pm
dep JFK 4:05pm arr DCA 5:03pm
dep JFK 7:05pm arr DCA 8:03pm
dep JFK 8:30pm arr DCA 9:28pm

Enjoy!

Hi... I seem to have seen a route map for NA offering nonstop D8S service on the ATL-SFO route. Was this during the time our your timetable? I am surpised we never really had NA in ATL? Guess that EA/SO/PI/DL were too powerful. Oh the glory days of the 70s/80s! I do remember seeing a Hughes Airwest D9S land in ATL after the merger with RC. It was so cool seeing the yellow plane in the South!

NA offering nonstop D8S service on the ATL-SFO route.

The DC-8's were gone by this point. The route was still operated by the 727 on Saturday and Sunday only. Actually was routed SJC-SFO-ATL-SFO-SJC. It was one of those "use it or lose it" route authorities from the regulated days.

After my move down here to CRP, much of my stuff is in storage. I look forward to getting a footlocker back out that is full of old flight sched's. I know for a fact I have an old RW,NC and SO (pre merger) scheduals. Along with a tonne of others, an absolute treasure trove to be sure.

That is quite a bit out of the way. Now if you mean Monterey, that's different.

Don't you mean 1:08am? I doubt it took 20+ hours.

Now, what cities and how many flights nonstop from Boise on RW? All DC-9s by then (from BOI), weren't they?

yes, whoops again! And I apologize for any future mistakes, though I might point out I'm doing this out of the kindness of my heart, not for a grade or a paycheck...now, on to your request.

Now, what cities and how many flights nonstop from Boise on RW?

Idaho Falls x 2
Las Vegas x 1
Lewiston x 2
Pocatello x 1
Portland x 3
Salt Lake City x 2
Seattle x 2
Spokane x 2
Twin Falls x 1

Unfortunately, the timetable does not specify what aircraft operate any particular flight.

National from Miami and Fort Lauderdale (I believe national always listed the city as Miami/Fort Lauderdale in the timetable and designated FLL flights with a little F next to the departure time)

National from all three NYC airports.

Thanks!

National from all three NYC airports.

Tall order, so I'll shorthand if that's ok. Nonstops and daily frequencies.

FLL:

IAH x 1
LGA x 3
EWR x 2
JFK x 4
Connections list MIA as well, but the number of nonstops is not listed.

MIA:

FMY: x 2
IAH x 2
JAX x 3
LHR x 1
LAX x 2
MLB x 1
MSY x 3
LGA x 4
EWR x 2
JFK x 4
MCO x 1
SFO x 1
SRQ x 1
TPA x 3
DCA x 4
PBI x 5

Again, there are flights to FLL, but are not listed.

LGA:

FLL x 4
MIA x 5
MCO x 1
PVD x 1
PBI x 1

EWR:

JAX x 1
FLL x 3
MIA x 4
MCO x 1
PHL x 1

JFK:

BOS x 1
CHS x 1
JAX x 1
FLL x 3
MIA x 5
ORF x 1
MCO x 1
PHL x 2
PVD x 1
SRQ x 1
TPA x 3
DCA x 7
PBI x 3

I remember in 1972 my dad booked my mom and me on an all day NA 727 trip from DCA to MOB (via ORF - CHS and/or SAV - JAX - TPA and possibly even PNS) to save a couple of bucks. A very annoyed Mom paid the extra $$ for us to return to IAD on SO. Was NA still flying that route in 1974?

There isn't a connection listed for DCA-MOB. However:

DCA-ORF-CHS-JAX dep DCA 10:45am arr JAX 1:53pm. JAX-TLH-PFN-PNS, USA - Florida">TLH-MOB dep JAX 2:30pm arr MOB 4:42pm.

The timetable is from 11/15/76 so the routing may have changed slightly, but that's what I came up with.
