Ocean Air To Fly GIG-GRU - Avianca Drops GIG

Tue Jun 06, 2006 12:26 pm

Ocean Air, a company also controlled by Mr. Eframovich, owner of Avianca, will begin it's service GIG-GRU-GIG with a Fokker 100 effective June 15.

Due to this, Avianca will drop the leg GRU-GIG-GRU and start to code-share this leg on Ocean Air planes.

Incredible that the cargo need to be sent to GRU by Truck and due to the change pax from Rio de Janeiro need to check-in very early (up to 5 AM).

AV0085 BOG 21:40 GRU 05:25
AV6085 GRU 07:30 GIG 08:30 (Operated by Ocean Air)

AV6086 GIG 05:30 GRU 06:30 (Operated by Ocean Air)
AV0086 GRU 08:30 BOG 14:15

Ocean Air is facing serious problems to get frequencies for their F100 fleet (nowadays they are running 3 out of 10), loads are not so high, and due to the large fleet on ground, still facing loss.

Varig, if under new ownership, could recover some space on the route as they still offer some frequencies BOG-GRU-GIG.

Nobody can deny that this could be seen coming from long ago. Despite registering good cargo loads, the passenger performance just wasn't there, especially during off-season periods.

Avianca will continue operating its successful daily flight to Sao Paulo unchanged.

Next week will be very important for the airline, as many new schedules will take place. Plenty of new routes and increased frequencies all over the place. GIG is the first destination to get reduced to far this year.

The GIG change is understandable as the the Efromovich companies seek, well, synergies.

AV's expansion happening as of next week is indeed very good news -LAX and BCN especially welcome, the latter has great prospects IMO, given that Catalonia hosts more Colombians in Spain than any other region of Spain -Madrid included- according to figures published yesterday.

Apart from GIG, there is another loser, though (in fact, already dropped) and it's the recently introduced second daily LIM service via UIO.
The 4 dailies to UIO remain, but it's clear that LIM was not doing the business. It also appears that the first flight BOG-UIO will be operated with a 767 3 times a week.

Incidently, I also read that VIPSA is seeking to operate flights to the US, initially, with AV's B757/767, although the aim is to establish its own operational base, given time.

And on another note, it seems that AV has LON and PAR on its sight, but not until 2008. Sadly.

Well, at the moment the reservation systems are showing AV48 0840 BOG/UIO 7B67 on FRI SUN MON, but the the return AV49 B767 on THURS SAT SUN. Go figure!

It is a cunandrum, and I wonder if it's related to what I read about Vipsa using AV planes for its intended routes to the US. But that's unlikely to happen imminently, so I would take the reservation system info with a sack of salt. It might well how things will work if and when Vipsa gets US access.

That doesn't sound good. What exactly is the underlying problem? Are the other 7 doing nothing all day? They have been delivered. Are they parked somewhere?

Exactly, it is a natural step towards the integration of both airlines announced several weeks ago (added to the shocking fact that they are only using 30% of the Fokker100 fleet).

I can understand AV dropping GIG, but what about the cargo?? Has to be send by truck?? I think RG can easily take advantage of this issue, and get the cargo destined to GIG, which obviously will suffer from AV decission. We'll have to wait and see how the other new routes and frequencies will perform, but I won't be surprised a few might fail to perform as expected (which is normal in any bussiness, not every decission proves to be right, still doesn't make a failure to any company, sometimes numbers can be supported in any spreadsheet, but in reality many factors come into the scene). Still, I think AV is doing a great job in new routes and streghtening older ones.

On the other hand, can't wait for AV to re-start service to LON and CDG, hopefully they can put it into service before 2008.

We all saw it coming months ago....

It would be nice if AV operated daily to GRU and 3x weekly to GIG, but the passengers are just not there, and the bilateral does not allow it.

Hopefully Ocean Air (soon Avianca Brasil) can get the F100s flying a lot more.

Yes, they are doing NOTHING all the day. They are now parked at SOD (Sorocaba) 120 miles far from Sao Paulo. On these pictures from Renato SOD.

Routes requested by Ocean Air are CGH-POA, CGH-CWB, CWB-POA and those are considered by ANAC as well-served nowadays.

Uhm, doesn't sounds right. Maybe a mistake by Mr Efromovich, to buy ac and have them park all day long?? Maybe AV is doing a little bit better with their planning for their new F-100s??

I agree, doesn't sounds right. Now with the result of RG auction (NV Participations owned by RG staff bought RG for US$ 418 million) we see Ocean Air very concerned with the result. If the judge accept the bid, ANAC probably will not release new routes to Ocean Air.

Also, rumors that Ocean Air bought 6 more F100's... to be confirmed !

No Boeing 767's are scheduled to fly to UIO, only 757's and MD83's and also the announcement that UIO-LIM-UIO route will be cancelled.

There's no logical reason to that.............unless they go to one of the companies that can really make them worth to have, bc in the ground, they sure are a waste of money.

That indeed seems to be bad planning. What do you guys expect to happen now? Will Oceanair get those requested routes or will they have to find some other work to do for these parked aircraft? I assume that the Brazilian authorities are not really looking forward to more competition in the domestic market with Varig not doing well.

Does Oceanair circulate the active planes or are there three specific planes active?

it appears to me that it might be better for them to SELL 6 F100s. That will actually save them money....
