Cathay Builds World's Biggest Air Cargo Terminal

Tue Jun 06, 2006 7:20 pm

Cathay Pacific Cargo is planning on building its own dedicated cargo handling facility at Chek Lap Kok. It will be the biggest facility of its kind in the world capable of handling 5 million tonnes of cargo annually upon reaching design capacity. The current biggest facility is SuperTerminal 1 also located at HKG & operated by HACTL and its maximum capacity is 3.5m tonnes annually.

Very good news for a carrier that is showing no signs of slowing down. Interestingly terminal handling costs are the second biggest costs for Cathay after fuel.

"Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, Asia's third-largest freight carrier, plans to build the world's biggest air cargo terminal in Hong Kong to meet growing demand and lower costs."

"Cathay Pacific, which operates from the world's second-busiest airport by cargo volume, wants its own terminal as rising global trade increases air freight moved through Hong Kong. The airline is also seeking to cut costs to compete with airports in Guangzhou and other southern Chinese cities."

"The city is facing competition from Guangzhou's Baiyun airport, which opened in August 2004. FedEx Corp, the No 2 US package-delivery company, is building a US$150 million hub at Baiyun to replace its facility at Subic Bay in the Philippines"

Quoting Hkg82 (Thread starter):

HKAA actually refused FedEx when approached a few years back. ZGGG was their second choice. Otherwise you'd be seeing as many FedEx movements as Cathay's.

Even if Fedex had a hub at VHHH it would not be that busy!!

As for the Cathay freight terminal its not approved yet as the AA are being twits, thinking about a tender to see if anyone else wants to run a new terminal (I think CX have been asking for about 6 months now). All I know is when they do get the green light HACTL are going to be very unhappy as their Super Terminal 1 now handles about 80% of Hong Kong's freight. Add to this the large new terminal at AAT (Asia Freight Terminal) and you can see the 80% is going to drop....
Bush, your a sad, sad man.
