ATL Oddity This Morning

This morning I was dropping my wife off at ATL to catch a flight. As we were walking into the terminal I looked up and saw a Southwest 737-700 with winglets taking off from 26L. The time was just a little after 7am. I thought that Southwest wouldn't touch ATL with a 10 foot pole. I know they don't run scheduled servive into ATL so I was curious if anyone knew what the story was. Do they run charters or have maintinance done in ATL? I guess this may be a dumb question but I wassurprised to see Southwest operating out of here.

Charter most likely. I don't know of any maintenance that would be done at ATL. I would assume it is going somewhere versus coming here and then leaving since I can't think of anything that has been going on in town over the last few days that would warrant a charter flight. There hasn't been any sporting event other than the Diamondbacks in town but they should have been long gone before this morning and I don't think they use WN for flights.

It's most likely a charter, but if WN could get enough gates at ATL (which is tough given that DL is at every single bloody concourse, and does a great job keeping FL from getting gates to say nothing of WN) I don't doubt that they would be there in a instant.

Most likely a charter. I've also seen WN aircraft at BOS from time to time.

Where do WN serve as an alternative to ATL ? I mean do they fly into an airport within Georgia as an alternative to ATL ?

Yesterday I was on a -300 and that morning the OPS agent gave us the A/C flow-sheet for the day and the last leg after STL-DAL was DAL-ATL....with a pax reading of "0". Then when I checked the last minute charter resources I saw that same flight number listed as a ferry to ATL, charter leg for the military, then ferry back to DAL. Maybe they swapped for a -700 at the last minute?

None. The closest airport they serve to ATL is Birmingham, AL. Other than some cheap ass folks (I'm looking at you Clark Howard!) WN is a non-player in the Atlanta market since most folks won't drive 2.5 hours to save a few bucks when they can fly nonstop out of ATL.

I know Fort Hood is there (it's right there in the flight plan even if I didn't.) That's why I suggested it might be a military charter since I can't really think of any reason to have a charter from ATL to Ft. Hood unless it was a military one.

Yeppers, in Georgia we really only have one airport with any service, I know we do have other like Savannah but they are not that large. Besides we have AirTran here at ATL, they pretty much cover our LCC needs.

Southwest is one of the largest fliers of DOMESTIC military charter. ATL is a big embarkation point for military travel over the Pond and a big disembarkation point for military travel returning from overseas. In many cases, military folks who arrive in ATL on an international military charter have onward travel documents that call for them to move on scheduled airline flights, and visa-versa. It's a big hub. It has great connections to everywhere in the Southeast. Much of our military is from and is based in the Southeast. So it all makes sense. (In a similar manner, international military charter flights also rotate troops to and from BWI and DFW. From all three airports, it is easy for them to connect to onward commercial air travel and also in some cases to commercial or charter bus to the Fort.)

GRK is also a huge embarkation and disembarkation point for both domestic and international military charter. Guard and Reserve units also have exercises and lift needs in the summer. You'll see flights back and forth between BIF and GRK all summer, usually on Southwest and ATA, but also on Sierra Pacific and whatever remains of the small domestic charter carriers (we used to see Planet, Falcon, etc., on these charters).

Indeed, if you look today, there's a flight later in the day on Sierra Pacific from ATL to GRK. So...the flight you saw is either conx from overseas flights landing at ATL, or it's troops bussed to ATL then to fly to GRK.

As to the amazement that Southwest would "touch ATL with a ten-foot pole", I assume that you understand that charters go wherever and whenever. Things that make ATL someplace that WN might not want to operate scheduled routes (like congestion) are completely irrelevant on a charter, where it is presumed that you will arrive way early (so as never to be late) and sit until your pax arrive.

It is not unusual to see AA 777s,SWA 737s,ATA 757s landing and taking off at GRK. Though I still do not know what charter is flying all white DC-10s (or MD11s). Mix in the usual AEagles,COex Saabs and RJs. And the twice a week charter to LAS on Allegiant and GRK has a variety of aircraft to see.

Perhaps Omni Air International (OAI) or World Airways? They fly those planes and don't have a super colorful livery. They also do lots of military charters so I would think they are good guesses.
