Ride In O&D Causes Parking Trouble At MIA

Wed Jun 07, 2006 1:38 am

While MIA's traffic has been growing at a modest rate in the past year, MIA's O&D traffic, which now accounts for 63% of the airport's passengers, has been growing at a significantly faster rate, especially domesticlly (AA's domestic O&D traffic was up 11% in 2005). MIA is looking at new options for building a new garage, including raising parking rates, which, surprisingly considering the airport's high fees, are among the lowest of airport's its size, which may be used to fund a new garage. By 2010, when MIA officials expect annual traffic numbers of around 40M, MIA may be short be as many as 1,500 spaces on a busy day.

American Airlines has been the main airline responsibile for the boom in domestic traffic, adding nearly a dozen new cities to their MIA domestic network in the past two years.

I assume this is somewhat of a direct result from FLL's delays, negative publicity, etc of recent times?

That would be my take, as it can not be because any one likes the MIA airport.

More to do with AA's new low fare structure, though that contributed in some way I'm sure, but not as significantly.

You'd be surprised how many do, especially if you fly an airline that uses Concourse H or A.

Make that C through G. B was closed last year and bulldozed in January to make room for the North Terminal project, AKA the project that ate the airport.

Concourse B is closed. Concourse C closes this year. Concourse D high gates are brand new, less than a year old, modern, open, and airy. Concourse E is a decent terminal. Concoure G and F are horrendous (I just used F last Sunday, terrible place), but most of the airlines that are there move to Concourse H and the brand-new J in February 2007.

Traffic originating/terminating at the airport and not making a connection in Miami.

On a related note, April 2006 numbers recently came in and they were awesome for MIA. Domestic traffic up 12.1% from Apr05 and international up 10.1% from Apr05. Year-to-date, traffic is up 5.4%.
