FedEx 1291: PWM-MEM On 6/6?

Wed Jun 07, 2006 11:55 am

I watched on FlightAware as this 727 took off from Portland, Maine and started its journey down to Memphis. Then, around the Connecticut/New York border, the thing bangs a hard right and goes straight north. Then it bangs another 90-degree right turn and heads due east to Boston, where I'm presuming it landed.

Anyone know what was up with this? This was on the evilest of days, 6/6/06.

Maybe a BOS originating plane broke and flag stopped, or had its own mx problem.

SOunds like BOS may have called for an Ad Hoc flight, either due to a MX or extra freight. FDX flies half full planes (and the occasional empty one) from the extremeties of the US to MEM that are designated as recovery flights for contingency. ATL at times became a regular unscheduled (yeah i know thats sounds wrong, but thats the best way i can put it) stop for flight FDX1257 RSW-MEM...

My first thought was the same as yours: There was a broken plane in Boston and FedEx needed some help there. But FedEx has recently downgraded from A310 to 727 on the PWM-MEM route, so I don't know how much room there would have been on the 727. That flight, as I understand it, pretty much is an L.L. Bean flight, since the massive mail-order company is a half-hour up the highway from PWM.

Here at Manchester, there's a daily A300 from Indianapolis. After sitting on the ground for a couple hours, the plane flies 50 miles down to Boston each evening. I always thought that was an oddity.
