Japan Airlines Joins One World

JAPAN Airlines (JAL) will join the global oneworld alliance, of which Qantas is a member, from early next year, the biggest of three new airlines to join the network in the next 12 months.
Asia's biggest airline has accepted an invitation in Paris to join the alliance, whose members also include carriers such as British Airways, American Airlines and Cathay Pacific.

Hungarian airline Malev and Royal Jordanian Airlines are also set to join the group.

I wonder if this would affect the code share between JL and NZ.

Not necessarily, most oneworld carriers have bilateral agreement with airlines from other alliances. Finnair code-shares with AF, OK, SU, SN, FV and others. I think QF has a code-share with AF. Though I'm not aware if a code-share exist between a Star and oneworld airline?

Indeed it does, I was on LX at the weekend, they codeshare with AA on ZRH-LHR.

Surely that will be stopped and changed to other star carriers?????

JL also codeshares with AF on NGO-CDG.

NZ is the only Star Alliance member that didn't move to T1 at NRT this month. They are staying at T2 because of the JL alliance. It makes me wonder if NZ will stay in Star. But I would think moving to OneWorld would be suicide.

Would also like to point out that this is the third JL Joins OneWorld thread in a week. But heck the others die so fast its hard to even know that they were around.

Hi,
NZ is Star Alliance and if I'm not mistaken, Star Alliance policy doesn't allow code shares with members of other alliances.

At least TAP ended it's code share with Iberia on LIS-MAD route, when TAP joined Star Alliance.

its starting to wonder weather NZ will stay in STAR too, why don't they just codeshare with ANA - this surley would make more sence! by using ANA for feeder traffic in and around Japan, and then NZ could move with the rest of the STAR airlines.
Vietnam time..

There is no policy in Star that fobids to codeshare with partners of other alliances. Some examples: OS+AF, SA+QF, LX+JL, SK+QF, and I am sure there are more.
But there exist a requirement to have a certain amount of codeshares with other members. If you fall under this limit you will be automatically be exspelled from Star (the MX example).

NZ still codeshares with JL because they are the only designated Japanese carrier between NZ and Japan. There is only one airline allowed from each side. So NZ can`t codeshare wil ANA.

Don't NZ and QF codeshare????

I remember there was talk some time ago about closer integration of NZ and QF. Perhaps this could lead to NZ joining OneWorld. Would be great for OW to expand some more!!!! All we need now is a presence in Africa and a bit larger presence in Latin America!!

Um... a bit larger in Latin America?? pardon me friend but I don't know if you have checked out AA's Latin AAmerican Network, they dominate. Look at MIA flight schedules on a daily basis. AA and not to mention LAN and it's affiliates dominate the market.

I agree and know that OW might be 'King' in Lat-Am, but I'm talking more about inter-LatAm than US-LatAm where AA rules. LAN is huge yes, but they have no penetration really into the Venezuelan, Mexican, Brazilian, Costa Rican, Panamanian, Guatemalan markets. That's why I said 'bit larger'!!!
