747 Accident (Overran) At MDE (Today)

Thu Jun 08, 2006 12:55 am

A 747 Cargo from TRADE WINDS fully loaded with flower to USA aborted the take off due to an engine failure and overran the wet runway in Medellin. 5 people were on the plane, all of them are safe. The plane is right now at around 150 meters away from the end of the runway and all the airport activity is closed. More news to come.

You beat me to it Bongo!

Operations seem to be normal now, CM flight to Panama had a delay of 1:15.
AV flight to MIA must be taking off now, again 1:25 delay. There's one flight to BOG cancelled and other delayed, among other things.

I just called my aunt to see if she lends me her camera so I can go to the Airport and see what I can get but it's gonna take minimum an hour from now, let's hope I can take something.

Go ! and upload the pictures here !

I just saw the images on TV, the aircraft seems to be very damaged

Edited: According to the airport manager, the airplane has to be w/o.

I just spoke to my aunt... it seems I won't be able to get the camera until 3 pm, it's two hours from now. If everything goes ok and I finally get the camera at around 3 I could take some pictures with the last two hours of light.

It's a pity.
But that means the Airplane will then be there more time than I expected, which broadens the possibilities for pictures.

Just looking at the extent of the damange makes you think this is definitely going to be a write-off. The left side wingbox is torn open, the nose section is heavily wrinkled and torn open a bit, the gears are destroyed, plus the aircraft is pretty old I guess. I don't see this aircraft ever getting repaired.

Ah, it's a shame if they have to retire her.

Looking at the fourth photograph in Reply 11, above, she almost seems glum.

I'm sure she had a great life, though. I think that 747's almost invariably do, being as capable as they are.

After viewing the pictures I don't think that the airframe and landing gear would be worth repairing and the replacing of the engines would be costly as well.

What a shame, thank god everyone aboard is ok. I don't know much about mx, but it seems this ex-Garuda won't see action anymore, probably cheaper to collect the insurance and buy another one before taking the time to repair it. Again, what a shame.

I wonder why it had so much trouble stopping. Cargo planes carrying flowers generally "bulk out" rather than reach their maximum payload. When they are carrying flowers, thus, they are rather light. Could it be that the pilots miscalculated their V1, VR and V2 speeds? Breaks were worn? Otherwise, I can't imagine how they manage to leave the runway.

Since a wet runway is involved, they could have overrun even if they had aborted below V1..right?

I just seen some pictures I don't think it would be money worthy to repair the nose and landing gear due to how old the plane is it will probably end up in the scrap yard.

Hmmm they might have been close to V1 then but aborting aboving V1 is a mistake that's likely to get you off the end of the runway. V1 takes into account the stopping distance required of the plane and maybe the crew didn't use effective enough reverse thrust or braking in the condtions at the time.

I would consider this a write off, it will be a very difficult job to try to move this airplane if it is salvageable due to the terrain where it is located, this part of the airport is a landfill and has a steep descending slope towards the approach lights which are built on metal structures; most probably the simplest way is to break up the aircraft in pieces for removal from the departure stopway and clearway of runway 18 end at SKRG.

Glad to hear no one is injured. At least not yet. I hope the crews don't get fired for this. But it does look like a grave accident. Besides, I think their modest fleet only consists of one 747 and one A300. What is Tradewinds gonna do now?

And all those flowers? What's gonna happen? I think there're gonna be lots of newlyweds in Medellin this week (lots of discounted flowers).  scratchchin

I think it is good news after all, because what I read is that one of the engines exploded.. imagine if this would have happened while being on the air...

Does someone has a better source of what happened? I read it on the newspapers but as we all know, journalists have no clue when talking about aviation...

If it was a single engine the Airplane could have kept flying with 3 engines and returned to MDE (or the closest alternate) to be serviced there, probably without the need of the likely write off.

There's not much info, but it seems an engine exploded while in the take off run so they tried to abort the take off but couldn't stop. I'm not sure if it was above or below V1, but the runway was wet (it's been raining here lately).

It seems they've already extracted most of the fuel of the Airplane and they're deciding what to do with it next, they say it'll take minimum 3 days to remove the Airplane, be it as a whole or in pieces. RCN reported a MIA flight cancelled, but I just tried to see the status of both AV and AA flight in their respective webpages and they seem to be normal and on time. I don't know the extent of the restrictions but I've seen LOTS of Airplanes above my house, which means extensive use of Runway 18 for take off... not confirmed though.

Thanks for re-posting the images. The fourth photograph in Reply 11 that I said made it seem that the aircraft appeared glum is the second photograph in Reply 36.

I would also observe that the mid-fuselage area in the last photograph in Reply 36 looks a bit dusty. I wonder if it was like that before the accident, or, perhaps it might have gotten that way from the dust or smoke resulting from the accident.

I don't remember reading that there was a fire, though.

[Edit: You can also see the "dusty" area from a frontal perspective in the second photograph, although it's less clear.]
