NW Airlink/XJ Saab 340 In New Colors?

Thu Jun 08, 2006 6:24 am

I was paging through the latest NW inflight magazine and noticed that on the page which shows the fleet, it has the Saab 340 in the new NW livery. I must say, it looks great. Have they actually started repainting any of the Saabs or is it planned?

Also, I am wondering if XJ still has the Saab that looks pink instead of red. I'd love to have a picture of that one.

Ask and you shall receive... It's N407XJ. I believe it's still the only one in the new colors, but it looks sharp.

Does anybody know why NW (or mesaba in this case) Chooses not to paint the tail red all the way down to the fuselage? I have to say it looks a little odd.

I remember this question being asked before, and IIRC it has to do with keeping the circumference of the compass the same on all of their aircraft.

There was a post on this a long time ago, but I can't find it.

I think Continental does something similar with the tails as well. I can't remember if the logo extends all the way down, but I know on the 737 tails, the forward extension of the tail remains white.

As for the XJ Saabs, I like NW's new livery, but I always appreciated how the old color Saabs weren't bowling shoe - rather they are bold red all over. They both look sharp! Since XJ will become all-Saab within a year or so, I suspect more will be painted over time - something that can't be said about the Avros.

XJ will probably need to emerge from CH11 before another plane is painted. Kinda hard to convince the judge its a necessity, or the emplyees that are being laid off or asked for a 19% pay cut. Then again, theres no guarantee that Mesaba will retain the flying....

I saw the SAAB in DTW last Friday -- looks good, but I hope they won't re-paint the Pinnacle plane with all the writing on it - that's my most favorite SAAB, and I wish I could identify it often enough to fly on it

Why does everyone say well in Chapter 11 blah blah, fact is, repainting planes when needed keeps them in the air, and will cost less down the road.

As for why XJ is apparently not doing more. Well, it was said all the aircraft that they repainted, each one when they stripped the paint off the found corosion on all the aircraft they repainted, the FAA said one more and the entire fleet would be grounded to fix the problem, thus XJ has stopped repainting the aircraft.

Actually the reason was more so that on every aircraft, the red would end in a perfect horizontal line, rather than vary with the different shape/size tail and how they meet the fuselage. I personally like the effect, it's nice and crisp.

Originally all Airlink aircraft were painted all-red when the livery came out.

uh...okay. so there is a corrosion problem with the saabs in the mesaba fleet...and they can ignore it as long as they don't repaint them...?!!

Love the "Doug" quote, and really starting to wonder about NWA - I've had a few complaint, and the on line customer care people apparently cannot, or more likely will not - read. I'm a long time platinum member, yet, right now, I feel as ignored as a first time flyer.

Dear Doug - please do some work on the customer service side of things for those of us who have maintained 5 years of platinum. We are the ones who flew on NWA when things were bad. And, although we search for decent pricing, we are the ones who continue to fly as prices go up. I cannot afford to fly on an LCC, I can understand the issues with in flight service (I talk with all the flight attendants, because I recognize many of them), but I cannot understand the idiocy of customer care. Dear Doug, please teach them to read, and also, be a bit of a figure yourself -- you are almost invisible these days, I respected Richard because he kept himself visible, but I picture you as a behind the scenes lawyer, avoiding visibility, hoping to stay hidden so that you are not to blame for anything. In my years in management, I've discovered that being invisible doesn't work, so Doug - come out into the spotlight, answer questions, make comments, and turn yourself into a real leader

Not true at all. The corrosion issue you mention is SB340-51-020R1 and AD2001-23-12R1.. and ONLY VALID to aircraft that have been re-painted AFTER leaving the Saab factory. NONE of XJ Saab 340B's have been repainted....except for 407. The issue comes from paint shops removing the Bonded Primer which is not allowed IAW with the Saab SRM. The bonded primer is the corrosion perventative that Saab uses in their manufacture process. The reason none have been painted... NO MONEY..!! The FAA has no authorization to ground the XJ fleet when none of the fleet meet the guidelines of the AD.

The aircraft the XJ had the problem with were A models aquired used from Express I and had been re-painted several times in their life. XJ had no control over the repainted of these aircraft and by no means reflects on their B+ fleet.

The Bonded Primer is the copper/gold color you see on the fuselage. The nacelles are primed as they are Titanium and the dorsail, rudder, hyd fairings and wing-body fairing are composite

The aircraft that people are refering to with the corrosion problem was N106XJ. This was an older A-model Saab that was obtained on the used leasing market by Mesaba. One of the previous operators had previously improperly repainted the aircraft, by damaging the bonded primer as EMBQA mentioned.

About 2 years ago, Mesaba was to repaint 106 into the new livery since they had to inspect the aircraft to comply with the AD. When they completed the inspection, they found more corrosion damage than was economical to repair on 17 year old A-model Saab. So, they decided to remove the aircraft from service instead of pay more to fix it than the aircraft was worth.

The B+'s are significantly newer, have not been repainted (other than touch-ups and polishing) -except for 407, and were delivered new to Mesaba. They are not affected with this AD.

Mesaba had grand plans to refurbish interiors and repaint aircraft prior to the bottom dropping out when NW and then their own holding company filing Ch. 11. They had plans to replace carpet on the Saabs, refurbish the Saab seats, dye the seat covers blue ( I believe they did this to one or two of the Saabs), plus they had a repainting schedule for the Saabs & Avro's of about 5 Saab's a year, and of course the new CRJ fleet. As you can see, plans quickly have changed. There is no money, plus labor negotiations, and of the fate of the Saab & CRJ RFP's.

Not to nitpick, but I believe MAIR Holdings is still solvent. Only Mesaba Aviation has filed for Ch. 11 protection ... not affecting MAIR Holdings or Big Sky.
