PHL's Int'l Terminal

Thu Jun 08, 2006 7:57 am

Its been a couple years now since PHL has opened their beautiful international terminal and to my suprise no new airlines have come there. Will there be any in the near future...maybe Swiss or SAS or maybe even El Al would not be bad.

Just because a new terminal opens doesn't not mean that airlines will come flocking to the airport, although it is somewhat of a factor considering the terminal did more than double the number of international gates PHL has.

No new carriers have come to PHL, however US has added 3-5 new European destinations from PHL if not more since the terminal opened. There are some rumors about Aeromexico, El Al, Aer Lingus and Air China. However they are merely rumors and i wouldn't count on any of them.

I think that EL and AM would be the ones that might be likely to come to PHL... PHL already has Ireland service, plus a rather large Irish population, as well as a Jewish population. Then again, that doesn't really mean anything. PIT also has large Irish and Jewish populations. That airport doesn't have service to any of those countries, let alone any substantial int'l service...

And the lure of connecting traffic is fairly low since there are far better places to do it (JFK, EWR, ATL, IAD, etc.) due to selection of flights, not to mention PHL is a delay-plagued airport and is HORRIBLE to connect between (it took me 90 minutes to get to my departure gate w/o checking luggage!!! I did it in 15 minutes at ATL recently!!! There are so many corridors to walk down and turns to make and lines to stand-in...it's totally ridiculous...)

Have a question. I (and a group of us) are going to be flying in to PHL from DTW. And then Connect with a US flight to GLA. Question is. Where is the International terminal and how easy is it to get to from the gate that we will be coming in on from DTW????? Any help would be great.

Thanks
Chuck

I feel sorry for anyone traveling from cities like, ohh, say Binghamton, NY to ORD or PHX with US via PHL. They arrive at terminal F and have to go back through security to get to the B or C terminal for their mainline connection. Why aren't there any connection ramps between the other terminals at PHL? Whoever designed that terminal layout must have either had a hangover or was high on some foreign substance...  drunk

or stoned. I think there is a shuttle bus running between F and B/C inside the security area though.

You will be arriving in terminal F assuming you are flying US Airways express to PHL. You should be able to get on the shuttle bus at F and take it all the way to terminal A. At which point you just have to walk to A-west(international terminal) I would try to give you better info about the shuttle but the brillant new US website only shows PHX and LAS terminal maps. Most people have a harder time connecting from an international flt to a domestic flt because you have to go back through security.

There is actually a shuttle bus that connects terminal F with the rest of the airport inside of security. The bus stops are at gate F10, C16 and A1. If you take the bus, which runs every 3-5 minutes, you will not have to clear security again. I agree that the layout isn't the best, but if your smart enough to read the signs and pay attention to instructions from the flight crew and gate agents, you shouldn't have a problem.

DTWAGENT: The international terminal is about a 10-15 minute walk from terminals B and C, which is where your flight from DTW will arrive at assuming your talking US and not NW, which is in terminal E and is not attached to the rest of the airport inside of secruity like the other terminals. If arriving in E, you will have to re-clear security to get to your connection. There is a series of moving sidewalks but the 15 minute walk includes walking on every single one of those moving sidewalks. Hopefully you've left yourself with plenty of time for your connection and the sidewalks aren't out of order.

PHLJJS: Thanks for the information. We are flying US all they way. I think we get into PHL at 7:12pm and depart for GLA at 8:25pm.
So we should have enough time. Besides lately everything coming and going at PHL in the evening has been running about and hour behind schedule do to VOL or Weather....

Just like to make a small correction. If you are flying on US 3434 which is a US Airways Express flt operated by Republic you will likely arrive in terminal C, otherwise you will be arriving in terminal F(if you're flying US)

Do all the Republic(includes Chautaqua) E70 flights arrive/depart C?

I believe most E70's use B and C now. I never see them at F anymore. The B and C gates all now E70 markings on the ramp. I see 1 or 2 E70's parked at B3 or B4 during the week, but most of the time they are over at C18-C24 I believe.

15 Minutes at ATL - a rare occurrence !!!

There is a long-term plan at PHL to reconfigure the entire airport with parallel runways and midfield terminals. Of course, it'll take major $$$$...

And the other airports you list aren't delay proned? Except for maybe IAD on that list, I think the delays at the other airports you list are worse than PHL, particularly EWR. I would say ATL, but the new runway should help immensly. And as far as PHL goes. I once made a ten minute connection in PHL when one flight came into C and the connecting flight went out of F. 170 pulled into the C gates, then ten minutes after the seat belt light was extinguished I was pushing back on an Air Wisconsin CRJ from the F gates. And there are plenty of selection of flights at PHL as well. JFK doesn't have nearly the domestic connections aside from B6, and US flies practically anywhere from PHL, especially east of the Mississippi.

Not trying to turn this into an airport comparison thread, but none of the airports listed on that list are great airports. PHL is probably the best for international arrivals, since there is no reclear of security if you are staying in PHL, plus with shuttle buses and moving sidewalks, connections are a breeze. Overall nationally, IAH and DFW are probably the big airports with the best FIS setups.

AF, LH and JM already have, and within a few months, BA will move their services to A-West. Remember, until very recently, A-West was a dedicated USAirways terminal - they paid for most of it. I don't really know why things changed, other than the city has become very active in trying to recruit international carriers into PHL within the past 2 years. They have initiated a major terminal shuffle program to clear more gates for WN and also to make more Terminal A-East gates available for projected international wide body use.

Practically anywhere from PHL except to places in the West, where the route network could be described only as pathetic. The "old US" served just seven big cities anywhere west of Texas - SEA, SFO, DEN, LAX, SAN, LAS and PHX.

How is that even possible? The terminals are long and narrow and abut one another in such a way that inter-terminal traffic flow should be self-evident. Unless you're referring to check-in to gate times, I'm truly curious how it took you that long. But it sounds like you mean connecting from one gate to another. No matter how you slice it (and allowing for a rather heaping scoop of hyperbole), PHL is not an airport that takes 90 minutes to navigate if you're already inside security.

You're right and you're wrong on that. Yes, there is a capacity enhancement program underway with regards to PHL and yes, midfield terminals *are* being looked at. *However*, PHL has in no way settled on a full airport reconfiguration. This page shows what the current proposals are and midfield terminals is only one of them.

Ok I think we have gotten really off topic here this was not a thread concering connections in PHL. I wanted to know what people thought about the possibility of some new international airlines at PHL in the near future. Lets focus people.

Looking forward to seeing it...I'm flying SEA-PHL-FCO and back in late Aug./mid Sept. I've never flown US or via PHL (or on the A330) so it will hopefully be a positive experience.

My girlfriend's parents went to Rome out of PHL on a US A330, and they said that it was a really good experience. The plane was huge!
