Icelandair CXL's 2nd Straight At BWI Wed Night

Thu Jun 08, 2006 11:14 am

Just got off the phone with my girlfriend, who was scheduled to fly Icelandair 642 this evening from BWI to Rekjavek. After waiting until after boarding time, the Icelandair staff announce that the passengers from *yesterday's* flight will now be boarding, and they don't know what will happen with tonight's passengers. Apparently the passengers from last night had enplaned and deplaned a few times already. Worse, there was no sign of a second plane--and the Icelandair ground staff isn't saying a word about what is going on. I hate to say it but it looks like my girlfriend is spending the night at BWI!

I know this is a discount airline, but what kind of third rate company screws its passengers for two days in a row!

Does this happen often?

UPDATE: Flight 642 has been cancelled for the second striaght day. Passengers are being sent to hotels and they are announcing a 24 hour delay. Unbelievable!

RE: Hell Is Icelandair At BWI Wed Night

There must be a real good reason why they don't (or can't), but my first thought would be to fly the Boston flight down to BWI to pick up who they can (lottery? haha) and then go from there to Iceland. Maybe it's a stretch to try that with the MSP flight, but if I were Icelandair's management I'd look to see if I could route one of my other flights into BWI. But with 'only' 757s, (and -200s to boot, rather than the -300s they sometimes use at Boston), there can't be many available seats.

Bottom line: People rave about Icelandair when things go peachy. But one problem can cascade into an avalanche because the carrier is very thin and can't fashion much in the way of a contingency plan.

Last nights aircraft apparently had a mechanical after arriving at BWI and the flight to KEF was cancelled. Another aircraft did arrive tonight as FI 643 from KEF, so there were two aircraft at BWI. There were both supposed to be departing tonight, one as the regular FI 642 and the second as FI 642A. FI 642 did depart around 10:00 p.m., but the flight plan for FI 642A is no longer active. The only thing that I can figure is that the aircraft from last night was still OTS, so they flew yesterdays passengers out tonight on 642 and delayed tonights passengers.

This appears to be what happened, as they later announced they would try and start the bad engine on the "second" plane, which was actually the plane from the day before.

An interesting addendum: FI put the passengers up for the night... in Annapolis!

I see that there is an Icelandair aircraft due to ferry in empty from Nassau later this afternoon and another one due to arrive from JFK, so hopefully your girlfriend will get out tonight.

TF-FIP is the aircraft in question. An electrical problem with the number one engine seems to be the problem.

North American is doing a rescue flight for the stranded passengers, while a second 757 is coming in from KEF to take out tonights passengers.

Passengers were sent to Annapolis due to lack of hotels in the BWI area as a convention has taken everything around the airport.

It was decided earlier today not to bring a bird in from NAS.

thats bad. Icelandair is a relativly small carrier so when one plane goes tech it screws their whole schedule.

A bit off topic but today the radar was out here at ARN , which caused a lot of delays. FI307 departed 4 hours late to KEF and teh second daily flight that was due to leave at 1012 pm is delayed untill 540 am..lol
poore people.
The first flight was delayed due to radar being out at ARN, but the second one could be late incoming aircraft.

Its unfortunate but every airline has had that happen at some point in time (even the best ones). Well if your stuck in BWI pick up a crab cake from G&M for me, i miss them.

Icelandair may be a small carrier, but it's anything but what I'd refer to as a "third rate" or 'discount" carrier. Maybe this could have described Icelandair thirty years ago, but not today. I've flown with them several times over the last ten years and they are comparable with most of the other airlines I take across the Atlantic.

That is interesting. Annapolis isn't that far from BWI, about 20+ miles; I think I'd much rather be in Annapolis that at the Airport Sheraton where there is nothing to do and no place even to take a decent walk.

Well there is the BWI trail that surrounds the airport. It is a great paved trail that has the best spoting locations. Its perfect for a walk, run or bike ride.

FIP ferried back to KEF last night. Who would ever think -3- trips to KEF in one evening. Hopefully things will be okay for a while at BWI for Icelandair!
