787-10 Moved Up To 2010?

Thu Jun 08, 2006 1:09 pm

I caught this link on another site:

http://www.gulfnews.com/business/Aviation/10045440.html

Seattle: Boeing has decided to manufacture a large version of the B787 or Dreamliner following demand from Emirates and other Gulf carriers, a top official of the US aerospace giant said.

Mike Bair, Head of Boeing's 787 programme, said Boeing will introduce the 787-10 in late 2010 with Emirates likely to be the first Gulf customer.

"We are working with Emirates to understand what exactly and how big the plane should be and we have a pretty good understanding," he told a select group of Middle East reporters at the Boeing facilities here.

"We are in the midst of commercial discussions. From our point of view it is not a matter of whether we will go for the 787-10, it is when. And we are confident of adding Emirates and more Gulf airlines to the list of customers."

Wasn't previous news/speculation that the 787-10 would debut in 2012?

I bet it's a typo. I haven't seen that suggested anywhere else, and I'm pretty sure the aviation press would be all over it.

This means the 787 has a complete upper hand in terms of delivery date (compared to A350). This would surely attract several airlines. Now, all Boeing has to do is throw in another assembly line for production (increase production rate), and they have themselves the DC-3 of the 21st century.

The earliest plausible first delivery of the B787-10 would be 2011 if Boeing were to make it an urgent priority. 2012 seems more likely. Perhaps the journalist confused the B787-9 and B787-10.

"...and other Gulf airlines"? There are quite a few other airlines in that region looking for aircraft. GF is one; QR, of course, is exasperated over Airbus's messing about with the A350, so they could be one and SV has mentioned that it's looking for aircraft in that size range. Then there's KU.

It would surprise me if they could produce the 787-10 by 2010, particularly as the first 787-9 delivery (to ANZ) isn't until 2010. Nonetheless, Boeng is expected to announce in the near future that it will increase significantly the production rate for the 787, so perhaps it could jointly announce this and the 787-10, perhaps with the -10 being built at LGB?

Etihad has said they will order 20+ 787/350 this year as well.

What if the 787-10 is the dedicated second line of the 787 production? If Emirates comes in and buys 50 or more, and other carriers, gulf or otherwise, follow suit and they end up with 200 orders just for the -10, it would seem logical to dedicate the second line just for it.

If Boeing open a 2nd B787 production line, then both lines will be able to assemble all B787 variants.

The article actually mentions EY/EK/QR/SV plus "some more" Gulf Carriers. Could be the whole darn lot of 'em!

I guess that is a Typo. The last I heard was that Boeing will not launch their 787-10 until late this year. That would give them three years to develop the 787-10, and I do not think that the engine manufacturers will have the engine ready by then.

It looks like the -10 will have the same engines as the -9, so no new engine development is needed. A future higher MTOW -10X will need new higher thrust engines.

It may be a typo, but it is not entirely impossible. The B787-10 will have the same engines, wings and undercarriage that B787-9, the only difference will be the lenght of the "tube". So it is quite possible that both versions can be designed and build concurrently. The biggest obstacle would be flight testing and certification, but if Boeing can pull this one out, it will be another big blow to the A350.

787-10 is due late 2012. That has not changed. It is a typo.
