Just out of curiosity, John: When you are talking face to face - is that also a continuous stream of words?

It depends on what version of the A340.

The A340-500/600 has a new wing, while the -200/300 shares the wing structure with the A330-200/300 - the internal structure (brackets, strengthening for the pylons) is all there for both aircraft, justs the equipment (pumps etc) for the outboard engines arent installed on the A330.

Airbus made the A340 with 4 engines because ETOPS 180 was in its infancy when the A340 was designed - you had to have 3 or 4 engines to do long distance out of range of an airport.
