E-170 Series Interior To The 737/A320 Type

Thu Jun 08, 2006 11:14 pm

Having just flown in a CRJ-200 with a 1-year old (who had his own seat in a sit-n-stroll) for a two-hour flight, I was kindly reminded why I try to fly the larger 737/A32X series jets.

Which made me wonder...how does the E-170 series of a/c stack up to these a/c? This photo I've attached below has a caption that made me wonder how the demensions of this a/c compare to the bigger jets...including aisle width...can anybody help here.

(BTW, I know this topic has probably been covered before...tsk, tsk)...just like most other topics on this forum)

The E170-190 is very roomy for and aircraft of it's size and offers a nice interior designed and built by the same people that build interiors for Airbus and Boeing. Keep in mind, it's not Embraer's design as to how close the seat pitch is, how soft the seats are, how plush the interiors is.. but the airline that orders.

A few of the guys I work with are old A320 mech's and have all said just how close the design of the E170's interior is to the A320.

Thanks for the info, but are the seats and aisle as wide as an A320, Boeing narrowbody?

The seats and aisle are wider than on mainline narrowbodies. Travelling on the E-jets is almost like flying domestic First Class. If you are really interested in learning more go to the Embraer web site and look at the cabin cross-section image for the E-jets.

E170/190 aisle width: 19.75"
B737NG aisle width: 18" to 20" (driven by seating configuration)
A320..?? I could not find it on the web site

Seat width is driven by the airline that orders them, so your choices can be many.... but most are around 17" +/-

Good enough for me! I know now I don't have to avoid them.

Just got off my first EMB-170 flight MCI-IAD last night.

LOVED the aircraft. I was seated in EconomyPlus, so the legroom was fine, but the width of the seat was superior to that of the A320 family for me. Had no problem going down the aisle back to the aft lav (which is surprisingly large, by the way), and would definitely take the 170 in Economy over a 737 in Economy any day!

The only downfall I could see with the seats is how they are a bench--meaning if your neighbor moves the slightest bit, you feel everything.

DIA,

I'd fly on the E-jets over all the planes you mentioned any time.

Roomy interior, comfy seats (size-wise), I prefer the 2-2 config over 3-3 (window seat and only one person sitting next to you!!!), you don't have to dislocated your neck like you do on the CRJs if you have the window seat (i.e., the wall is pretty straight and doesn't curve towards your head), nice big windows, and overhead bins that can actually handle most carry-ons (so you don't have to gate-check them like on the CRJs).

I only have two complaints: (a) the windows are spaced quite far apart, so sometimes it's a pain looking outside and taking pictures, and (b) since they are smaller than the B737s/A320s they don't handle turbulance as well.

But, overall, I personally love them!

DL Embraers are extremly roomy as the plane is limited to 70 seats for ALPA rules. I flew in the first class from LGA to ORD. The seats are very wide. The leather is extremly soft and comfy.

Shuttle America, operate the 170 for UA and is the only UAX carrier with them, RAH is the only US operator of the 170.

Everyone,

Thanks for all the info and recommendations...I will definately book passage on this a/c for a return trip out east this fall with my 1-year old.

If anyone cares to be interested...As I usually book passage to IAD from DEN, I always seem to get an option of taking UAExpress either DEN-MSP-IAD, or DEN-HOU-IAD. Quite interesting...have any of you done this, or something similar? (I usually get on a 777 and go through ORD, or straight to IAD)

My hunch is the E-Jets have raised the bar a bit in comfort. It's likely the 737 replacement will have a more flexible cabin.

In a 3+3, we could see the following (Includes arm rests):

2 Class:

2+2 (MiniPod Type Seat with lower pitch)

68" - 24" Aisle - 68" (160" Cross Section)

2-1-2:

48" - 20" Aisle - 24" - 20" Aisle - 48" (160" Cross Section)

3+3 (18-19" Seat)

65" - 30" Aisle- 65" (About a 160" Cross Section)

Or 3+3 comfort (19-20" Seat) - (Medium Cost Carrier, No First):

68" - 24" Aisle - 68". (160" Cross Section)

or 2+2+2 (Low Cost Carrier 17-18" Seat):

41" - 18" Aisle - 41" - 18" Aisle - 41" (160" Cross Section)

160" interior cross section provides a lot of options.

I flew the E170 (or was E175?) on LO last month AMS-WAW-AMS, I must say it was the best economy class layout I've ever seen. I also quite like the E145 if you sit on the left (window=aisle). It was much more comfortable than, let's say, biz class on KL (which I also flew on that route).
I scratch my head, therefore I am.

If you ever visit Canada try AC's new EMB 175 and 190  Smile AC is the only North American carrier flying both jets ..

LO should have been the 170.
