A380 @ DFW

Sun Jun 11, 2006 12:03 pm

Ok so I talked to an AA mechanic the other night who said that the A380 was planning a stop at DFW on its tour of the US late this year. I know it's not an extremely reliable source like "the news" or anything, but I was wondering if some of our friends across the pond might have any new information on the A380's scheduled tour of the US. Anything would be appreciated

Thanks
Jimbo

Airbus is planning a tour of the US? Would be great to see, but not something that had even been remotely announced to the public as of late.

What kind of tour is it going to be? Or are we talking about DFW as a destination for route proving?

Since no US airline has expressed an intrest in buying one I doubt highly it wll be in the US on tour. Besides, they already did a 'world tour' last year.

How can you do a world tour without stopping at all the countries that you new aircraft will even serve. US airlines maynot be supporting the plane but US airports are putting millions of dollars of upgrades into thier taxiways, the least they colusd get for thier hard work is a visit.

Airbus is about to start the so-called "early long lights" (ELF) with MSN 002, F-WXXL.
Some of these long flight tests may bring the A380 to US airports that non-US customers intend to serve.
Before getting exited, understand that this is a speculation on my side.

Does DFW even see 747s? It would definitely be interesting to see the 380 in the US, but considering that no one in North America is interested in the 380 besides FedEx (which has already signed on), I have to say I'm a skeptic.

Yes, KE flys a 747 or 777 to DFW depending on the time of year. Plus, we see a decent amount of 747 cargo service.

UPS also has 10 on the books. But nevertheless, I still don't see Airbus sending a whalejet to Louisville just to impress a few packages...

Passenger? no (except an aircraft sub)

We get a good amount of cargo 747s. Korean, Cathay, Singapore, China Air, Soon to be Air China, Lufthansa (switched with an MD-11), UPS, Atlas, Eva. I think we get more-it's just slipped my mind. Of course we get the random Southern Air and CargoLux

Air France recently started Cargo service to DFW with its 747. Also expected to start passenger service.

If the A380 comes to DFW, I wish it passes by founders plaza  Smile which is of course not gonna happen. Might probably land at 18/36 and head straight to Terminal D.

It would be brilliant to see the 380 at DFW, but I'm a skeptic. The facts don't line up, and AA is just too boring of an airline to ever buy an exotic like the 380

To my knowledge, KE only puts a passenger 777 to DFW. LF and JL both used to put 747's into DFW back in the day...

Straying from the original thread, but would PHL be likely to see the A380 with the UPS hub here?

KL does use a 777 but last summer it changed to a 744 just for the summer, but no such luck this year. UPS operates a 747 almost daily at DFW along with an MD-11. Not to mention that they are expanding their operations at the DFW hub... It's a process. There are also rumors of a new cargo facility on the east side north of taxiway EL mirroring the new cargo additions on the west side. With the big focus now-a-days on International cargo... it's a possibility.

As for the A380, it will go either to the new TD or one of the west cargo facilities. just to show that it fits.

It's a World 'Sales' Tour. They stop at the headquaters of airlines that are interested in buying the aircraft.... not just because it's due to serve a certain airport. All the information needed to deal with the aircraft can be done so through the aircraft Airport Operations Manual

They'd fly it in for operational testing. Don't be surprised to see it Memphis, Louisville, JFK, LAX and SFO.

There is no real need to. Everything operations needs to know about the plane can be learned from the A380's Airport Operations Manual. If you've ever read one it tells you EVERYTHING about the plane any ground personel need to know. Just to fly the plane half way around the world so rampies can open and close the cargo doors and dump the lav is costly and stuiped.

This is for a possible QF SYD-DFW link. Excellent tie-ins to the AA/oneworld network would mean good loads on SYD/MEL - ORD/JFK.

I remember last July about mid month when I was coming from Las Vegas to DFW on an AA MD 80 when we taxied past the new D terminal (It just opened the week before.) all the gates were empty except one gate which had a KE 744 parked at it. I'll be heading through DFW again on 30 June on the AA71 flight from FRA. I can't wait!!! Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin Big grin

Our airport here at DFW was named the best cargo airport in the world, making it to me at least a candidate for service. DFW will in fact be A380 ready with the newly built international D terminal. Also with airlines like lufthansa, and potentially singapore, and quantas providing service, it seems possible DFW may see A380 service.

Ideally I'd love to see the A380 with passenger service at DFW... Think a fully loaded A380 taking off on 17R when it's 102*F at 1pm in the summer (full length runway take off) but I sincerely doubt it will happen. I don't know if there is a route strong enough to support such a large plane.

I think we should just keep our fingers crossed for the cargo A380's.

DFW will get an A380 stop during the US tour (heard the same rumor) but it will be for cargo operations tests at the new Trammell Crow Int'l Cargo Center on the Southwest side and at the UPS ramp at the Northwest side.

Qantas' service is all but guarenteed, but it will be served by 777-200LR.

Then why did they feel the need to bring it to Heathrow a few weeks ago? It was for exactly the things that this 'manual' should have covered, no?

That would be the new international phase 3 cargo are where Cathay and China Southern (Dynasty) load up.

According to the mechanic I talked to. Everybody was planing on a big "dog and pony show" Which bugs me because as usual... I'm the last to know.

No... You can pretty much expect AA to turn down Airbus aircraft even if they're free...
But, believe it or not, DFW has a little bit, (if not much) to do with everyone else but AA...
It seems that the good money coming into the market for north Texas is in Cargo, and DFW is working on it. Read above to see all the cargo services offered at DFW. And you can bet on more to come!

Don't bet on it! Qantas will NOT buy the B772LR UNLESS it makes sence on SYD/MEL-LHR. They will NOT buy it just for DFW. On the other they MAY buy the B748I just or mainly for DFW. Forget the B744 or 744ER, not enough range.
