For an airline that likely doesn't have the money to afford a proper paint job, they probably had no other alternative.

But I wouldn't say that's a very common practice for flying aircraft. Most airlines have the money to ferry their aircraft to painting facilities that do it all by airbrushing and masks (and to some extent vinyl decals for some lettering and logos). Some airlines do operate their own painting facilities (I believe Delta does, am I right on that?), but most simply contract with other companies ... as there are alot of environmental restrictions (at least on the US) for painting facilities and thus they're not cheap to operate.

However...some aircraft that are being retired or otherwise permamently withdrawn from service often have their titles simply painted over with a roller or spray can. No need to do go to all the expense when it's not for looks.
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

Small repairs, touch-ups, or things like the outline around exits can and are rolled/brushed on.

Why dont you all see how they paint Orient Thai 747s. They use Bamboo stilts and bamboo ladders and use rollers and spray paint to just paint the tails, no two tails look that identical, cause they are hand painted out in the hot sun on the BKK cargo hard stands. It was fun to watch them do it, very pathetic and they looked like Vietcong to me. with flip flops and grey pajamas, and sun hats.

I remember seeing brush marks when I boarded an Air India plane soon after they introduced that hideous red sash livery.

I remember the AS ground crew at KTN used rollers to paint out the AS name on a 727 they parked off the end of the runway in KTN back in the early 70's...

They used white paint to hide the AS name and tail logo.... while they waited until they were cleared to clean up the mess....

Like everyone could not figure out who overshot the runway....dohhh!

I think AI has a well equipped paint bay of it's own at BOM...what you may have seen is touch-up paint near the door.....

I am surprised that the FAA denied a clearance for a post maintenance check out flight. Knowing how they are about safety, I was surprised at this. They could always have gotten US Citizens to perform this check flight if they were worried about security.
The FAA gets real funny about aircraft that fly over populated areas.
