Ethiopian : MD11 , 777

Mon Jun 12, 2006 5:24 pm

Ethiopian has cancelled the lease of 2 744s as they are not available immediately.
Instead they will receive one A330-200 (NOT 2) , arriving June 17th , and following by an MD11.
Both planes will be leased for 6 months.
They will be replaced by either 2 777s or 2 767-300ERs , depending of the avaibility on the second hand market.

I really wonder where that A332 is going to be sourced from. A332s are currently very difficult to get by. I am guessing we are talking about an MH-frame. MH has been disposing of the A332s, and two of them are/were supposed to go to VN, with some others being withdrawn.

Is the number for the A330s only one?

Do you think ET will be able to do as planned? I doubt very much the availability of both 777 and 763 in the market . . . or else the lease rate may be expensive.

ET should have gone for the 777-200ER during its fleet renewal which saw the phasing in of new 763s & 73Gs. This was a strategic mistake that is costing ET dearly interms of limited capacity. Look at KQ and their 777s. They are bringing them fortunes! IMHO ET should be very careful when it comes to the decision on the composition of the 787s it has on order.

Cheers!

IIRC the additional frequency is already being operated, with the fourth flight leaving on Wednesdays. As for capacity, that's another question, as it may be useful given the fact that finding a seat on ADD-IAD these days is almost impossible.

Quoting Ethiopian787 (Reply 21):
IMHO ET should be very careful when it comes to the decision on the composition of the 787s it has on order.

One thing that comes to mind is the fact that ET does not operate daily frequencies on many routes. As such, with the 78s being added to its fleet, and the airline's intentions to add more frequency to its existing routes (long gone are the 2x per week flights we know about), and the range and economics that comes with the 78s, it appears that it was definitely the right decision. KQ, while it has 77s, also has at least daily flights to LHR and AMS which it may or may not be filling to capacity - I am sure ET would deploy a 767 to London if there was a demand for it, for example. The 78s would allow ET to reach Beijing nonstop, same with IAD, and remove weight restrictions on Hong Kong and Guanghzou which could lead to nonstops, allowing it to be even more competitive. Now, in terms of DXB and LOS, there does appear to be a need for additional capacity, so aircraft like the 77s could be used for such routes - it definitely does not help to have two flights go to DXB within 20 mins of each other.

There is no way ET will be able to fly nonstop to Washington. The altitude is way too high.

Demand from London to Nairobi is probably many times that of London to Addis.

Thank you Becca735.

It shows the MD-11 will operate IAD-ADD 3 times a week and a 763 once a week. How will ET manage the cockpit crew that fly the 763 once a week. They stay in DC the whole week or what?

I think what Ethiopian787 wanted to say is that ET should take care when deciding on the mix of 787s, the number of 787-8s and 787-9s.

So, I guess we're still wondering where it's coming from. As I mentioned on the World stock board, I suppose that the wet lease could be with Air Namibia, which appears to be taking its 2 MD11s out of service as they replace them with A340s, although I know nothing more than what they're saying on their site and I think somewhere else that I Googled. I suppose the wet lease could also be with one of the other MD11 operators (like Finnair or KLM or VARIG), although that seems highly unlikely. Absent that, it's probably a decent bet that it's coming from World, although there has been no official confirmation of that from WOA or Ethiopian.

I do note that Ethiopian didn't issue a press release about the A330 until just days before it began service, so there's no reason to believe that we'll hear anything official until the end of June about the MD11.

Regarding the MD11, ET's website has confirmed the arrival of the aircraft.
It is being leased from World Airways in its current livery.
