AA 777 Makes Emergency Landing At Dublin

Mon Jun 12, 2006 7:14 pm

Just heard a report that an American Airlines plane has made an emergency landing at Dublin in the last hour after the smell of smoke was detected in the cabin. It was en route LHR-US.

It landed safely and had 160+ pax on board.

It was a 777-200, and the smoke was detected in the cockpit. It seemed to originate from the ovens. There were 135 passengers on board.

Is it typical to have such low load factors on an LHR-JFK op?

With AA, BA, VS, and various others flying LHR-JFK it's almost a shuttle service. The chances of every plane in the day being full are quite low I'd imagine.

I would guess that the average load factor on all flights LHR-JFK this time of year is about 90%

Actually this depends on the day of the week. Late Sunday and early Monday, as well as late Friday flights are normally full. For the other days, it depends but loads tend to be pretty high. You will ge the occasional blip like this one though.

signed 50 times LHR-JFK on AA in the last 18 months.

I flew ORD-LHR a couple of weeks ago..there were only 2 seats empty.....last week, I flew return LHR-LAX..there were about 40 seats empty, but that is still a load factor of > 80%........with nothing empty in F or C class..

This time of the year (i.e., end of May and first two-three weeks of June) eastbound transatlantic flights on virtually all airlines are packed to the gills as Americans start their summer vacation. Westbound is considrably lighter as the Americans just started their trips and the Europeans have not started their summer vacation yet. We will start to see heavy loads in both directions beginning from the last week of June through July and early August.

Thankfully they're not always fully loaded as to give us non-revs a chance  Cool
We tried VS last year and they were wonderfull, we got really good seats and a bottle of champagne 'for the road'.

I know what you are saying...I travel to London a few times of the year....and those flights do quite well....actually, I flew LHR-LAX on AA-135 which was about 82% full....AA-137 (following flight) was completely full....

In the early 1980s a statistic bounced around the industry that all trans-Atlantic North America/Europe routes contained the equivalent of fifty empty 747s a week (calculated in empty seats). Today's low pricing flexibility rather than IATA rate rigidity of the past no doubt reduces that a lot today, though it doesn't mean the carriers are making any more or losing any less.

Doesn't the "various others" only refer to UA? Or am I missing carriers not based in the US or UK (someone like Air India or something of that nature)?

Of those you mentioned, only AI flies LHR-JFK. KU flies it as well in addition to AI and the four American/British carriers.
