DOT Grants US Airways Slot Exemptions For DCA-SRQ

Tue Jun 13, 2006 7:27 am

The DOT has granted US Airways two within-perimeter slot exemptions to use for daily roundtrip DCA-SRQ service.

During the high (winter) season, US will use the EMB-190 on the route on weekdays, and the A319 on the route on weekends. During the low (summer) season, USX/Republic will use the EMB-170 on the route on weekdays, and US will use the EMB-190 on the route on weekends.

These slot exemptions were returned to the DOT by NK after having been used for DCA-MYR service.

OH had filed a competing application for DCA-SAV service in this proceeding. FL filed an application for DCA-IND/MDW service that was not considered by the DOT due to IND/MDW not being eligible airports for this type of slot exemption.

The order is available at http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf96/401343_web.pdf.

SAAAAWWWEEEEETT.

Looks like service must start by Aug 17th. We should know USAirways schedule and aircraft type used in the next 30days.

I wonder if they will reduce the CLT flights??

The cards are all still landing the right way for US. Hopefully this run of good fortune continues  Smile

Didn't US apply for these rights quite some time after OH, like, a few months? Shows that "First come, first serve" doesn't apply at the DOT.

No, of course "first come, first serve" doesn't apply. Under the AIR 21 law, this is a competitive slot allocation with the slots given to the airline with the best proposed use for them, as determined by the DOT. This isn't some childish "finders keepers, I got there first so its mine" thing.

Read the docket. There's an application window during which US, OH and FL submitted proposals. FL's proposal was thrown out because it fundamentally failed to meet the guidelines - it was another ACAA special whining about how unfair slots are, and proposed that these "small hub" slots be allocated for service to Chicago and Indianapolis. The DOT properly filed it in the wastebasket.

The DOT then determined that both US and OH had strong proposals, but due to the larger and faster-growing community that US proposed to serve, along with the larger aircraft proposed for the route, they awarded the slot exemptions to US.
USAir A321 service now departing for SFO with fuel stops in CAK, COS and RNO. Enjoy your flight.

Looks like UsAirways.com has schedules in the system 1000am departure DCA-SRQ and a 1255pm departure SRQ-DCA using the E-170. Looks like it starts Sep 5th. Probably the slowest month for SRQ. I also don't see any reduction in CLT flights. Still a few months away and I'm sure a bunch of scheduling still needs to take place.

Quoting CMHSRQ (Reply 6):

It'll start before that. US must begin service on the route by August 15.

The correct schedules through October will probably be loaded this weekend.

cool,
I read that in the documentation, thats why I mentioned the bunch of scheduling still needs to take place thing. It also says a/c will be a mix of E170, E190, and A319, but they have all E170 on it now. US must also reply to the DOT by July 12th with the schedules. My fingers are crossed for continuing positive traffic at SRQ. This summer is going to be tough.
